Haitian-born doctor builds $6.1 billion biotech company
Herriot Tabuteau has turned a bold vision into a billion-dollar reality. His company, Axsome Therapeutics, is now valued at $6.1 billion on the Nasdaq. The physician and entrepreneur focused on brain disorders often ignored by larger drugmakers. That focus has reshaped the biotech landscape.
Founded in 2012, Axsome now has three drugs on the market and five more in development. These treatments are designed to help more than 150 million Americans battling depression, ADHD, and Alzheimer’s disease.
A different path to drug development success
When Tabuteau launched Axsome, he challenged the traditional way of building biotech companies. Instead of spreading resources across many projects, he focused on developing drugs one at a time. He believed this reduced risk and kept costs lower.
“Doing things like everyone else leads to the same outcomes,” he explained. “We wanted outcomes that stand apart.” That mindset paid off, especially as clinical trials for other companies often cost $50 million or more. Axsome has been able to do them for 30% to 50% less.
From early struggles to breakthrough with depression drug
The road to success was not easy. When Axsome first went public in 2015, its market value fell under $100 million. Investors doubted the company after one of its early pain drugs failed.
The turning point came in 2022 when the FDA approved Auvelity, Axsome’s treatment for major depressive disorder. Unlike traditional antidepressants, which can take eight weeks to work, Auvelity showed results in just one week. Shares soared by 65% in a single week, pushing Axsome’s value to $3 billion.
Alzheimer’s breakthrough brings global recognition
Axsome’s second major breakthrough came in 2023. Its drug AXS-05 was approved as the first treatment for agitation in Alzheimer’s patients. Experts hailed it as a milestone for the 6.2 million people living with the disease in the U.S.
“This is a major problem,” said Dr. Jeffrey Cummings, a leading Alzheimer’s researcher. He explained that agitation often leads families to place loved ones in long-term care. The drug offered new hope for patients and caregivers alike.
Ambitious plans for the future
Today, Axsome shares continue to rise, outperforming the Nasdaq Biotech Index. The company is now pushing to release an antipsychotic treatment that could become the only one available in its class.
Tabuteau, educated at Wesleyan and Yale School of Medicine, is not slowing down. The company is projecting $3 billion in sales from Auvelity and another $3 billion from its Alzheimer’s drug. Its long-term goal is to reach a $16.5 billion market value.
“We might be a small company in size,” Tabuteau said. “But we are not small in fundamentals or ambition.”
