Shewarge Alene, the Ethiopian long-distance runner and winner of the 2025 adidas Stockholm Marathon, has passed away at just 30 years old. She collapsed during a training session in Addis Ababa on September 23 and later died in the hospital, according to African Athletics United.
Her death comes only months after she secured her biggest career victory at the Stockholm Marathon in May, crossing the finish line with a time of 2:30:38. The tragic news has shaken the running community, which recently celebrated her rising success.
