Sylvia Rhone Announces Exit From Epic Records

Sylvia Rhone, one of the most powerful figures in the music industry, is stepping down as chairwoman and CEO of Epic Records at the end of September. She has led the label for more than a decade, shaping its direction and championing artists across genres.

Her announcement marks the close of an 11-year run at Epic, where she first became president in 2014 before being elevated to chairwoman and CEO in 2019. In her letter to staff, Rhone reflected on her groundbreaking role, writing: “This role at Epic represents the third time in my career that I’ve been the first woman and first Black person to serve as CEO of a major record label owned by a Fortune 500 company.”

First Black Woman to Run a Major Record Label

Rhone’s career has been filled with historic firsts. She became the first Black woman to chair a major record company when she was appointed chairman and CEO of Elektra Entertainment Group in 1994. Years later, she carried that trailblazing spirit into her leadership at Universal Motown and then Epic Records.

Her success was not just symbolic—it shifted the culture of music. At Epic, she guided a diverse roster of artists, proving that representation at the top of the industry creates space for new voices and visions.

From Secretary to Industry Leader

Rhone’s journey began far from the executive suite. She started as a secretary at Buddha Records and worked her way through roles at ABC Records and Ariola Records. In 1981, she joined Elektra Records, eventually rising to vice president and general manager of Black music operations at Atlantic Records.

By 1990, she was chairwoman of EastWest Records America. Only four years later, she made history once again at Elektra. Each step of her career reflected her persistence and determination to open doors for herself and for others.

Legacy at Epic and Beyond

After leaving Universal in 2011, Rhone founded Vested In Culture, a boutique label in partnership with Epic. Three years later, she began her 11-year run at Epic Records. Under her leadership, the label thrived and artists found a steady platform to reach global audiences.

As she closes this chapter, Rhone has not announced her next move. However, her influence will continue to shape the industry for years to come. Her letter made it clear: “It’s been an extraordinary journey … and I’m very excited about the future.”
