Serena Williams Steps Into Broadway as Producer
Serena Williams has swapped her tennis racket for the producer’s chair. The 23-time Grand Slam champion is stepping into a new arena—Broadway. This fall, she joins the producing team of Hell’s Kitchen, the hit musical created by her friend and superstar musician Alicia Keys.
The collaboration is a historic one. For Williams, this marks her first time producing a Broadway show. For Keys, it’s another milestone in a project that began back in 2011 and finally landed on Broadway in 2024. Their partnership represents a rare moment where two Black women powerhouses are leading Broadway forward.
Williams shared her excitement in a statement:
“I was blown away when I saw Hell’s Kitchen on Broadway last summer. I am proud to join the producing team of my first ever Broadway show and support Alicia and the amazing company of Hell’s Kitchen as they get ready to light up the country on tour.”
Alicia Keys Brings Her Story to the Stage
Hell’s Kitchen is a deeply personal project for Alicia Keys. The Grammy-winning artist wrote both the music and lyrics, weaving her own New York upbringing into the story. The musical follows Ali, a teenage girl growing up in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood, chasing big dreams and facing tough realities.
Keys described why having Serena Williams onboard means so much:
“Our show is all about dreaming big, and there is no one who embodies that spirit quite like Serena Williams. I am so excited to have Serena join the Hell’s Kitchen family as a co-producer as we begin our North American tour…it just keeps getting better!”
The show’s first Broadway run was an instant success. It received 13 Tony nominations in 2024, winning Best Leading Actress in a Musical for Maleah Joi Moon and Best Featured Actress in a Musical for veteran Kecia Lewis. Earlier this year, the production also picked up a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album.
Hell’s Kitchen Heads on Tour Across North America
Momentum for Hell’s Kitchen continues to grow. After a celebrated Broadway run, the production is preparing for a massive North American tour. The first stop is Cleveland, Ohio, with more than 30 cities lined up.
This expansion gives audiences nationwide the chance to experience Keys’ powerful story and Williams’ influence as producer. The partnership ensures that Hell’s Kitchen will not only shine on Broadway but also connect with communities across the country.
Williams summed it up best: her love for the production is about more than entertainment—it’s about representation, empowerment, and showing what happens when Black women collaborate at the highest level.
Two Icons, One Vision for Broadway’s Future
Together, Alicia Keys and Serena Williams are rewriting Broadway’s narrative. Their collaboration brings new visibility to stories rooted in Black culture, Black womanhood, and ambition. It also opens doors for more diversity in theater, where representation has often lagged.
For Keys, the journey has been about turning personal history into art. For Williams, it’s about supporting a story that inspires audiences to dream without limits. Together, their partnership proves that Broadway is not just about tradition—it’s about transformation.
As Hell’s Kitchen takes the stage across America, it carries with it a bigger message: Black women are not only part of the story—they are writing it.
