Missouri CROWN Act Champion
Rep. Raychel Proudie has built a reputation as one of Missouri’s most committed lawmakers. She is a Democrat representing North St. Louis County and a certified teacher and school counselor. Her background in education guides her push for policies that directly support students, families, and marginalized communities.
One of her most impactful achievements is leading the passage of the Missouri CROWN Act (HB 1900). This bipartisan law prohibits discrimination based on natural hair textures and protective hairstyles often linked to race. “We must be much more interested in what we are putting in a student’s head than what’s going out of it,” Proudie explained. She stressed that every person deserves access to schools and public spaces without fear of bias.
The law passed with strong bipartisan support, reflecting years of testimony about the harm of hair-based discrimination. Even House Speaker Dean Plocher supported the measure, noting, “This legislation is one more way that we can stand up and let all students know they are welcome and valued.”
Fighting for Social and Racial Justice
Proudie’s leadership extends far beyond Missouri. She has shown strong solidarity with other Black lawmakers, including Texas Rep. Nicole Collier. When Collier stood firm in a legislative chamber, Proudie praised her courage, saying, “It is not lost on me that yet again a Black woman is putting her body and freedom on the line in defense of, or to save the masses.”
Her comments highlight her belief in the need for action, not just words, when it comes to justice. For Proudie, advocacy means putting her own energy and platform into real movement, whether the fight happens in Missouri or across state lines.
Delivering Major Investments for Communities
Beyond civil rights, Proudie has helped secure historic funding for her district. As a member of the powerful House Budget Committee, she played a key role in bringing millions to Kinloch, Missouri’s first Black municipality, and to Lambert International Airport. She also helped deliver $100 million in tornado relief to St. Louis residents affected by devastating storms.
Her work on public safety has also stood out. She helped obtain $27 million for a modern police facility in St. Louis County, which even includes a childcare center for officers and staff. In addition, she secured $1 million for the Kathy J. Weinman Shelter, the only residential domestic violence shelter in the county. These victories reflect her focus on both security and compassion.
A Hands-On Community Leader
Proudie often takes a direct approach to community politics. She co-hosted a town hall with Rep. Brian Williams in Ferguson, where over 100 citizens came together to discuss local issues. She thanked volunteers and community leaders for their role, adding that it is citizen engagement that truly moves communities forward.
Her involvement is deeply personal. She is the daughter of an Army veteran and a state worker dedicated to mental healthcare. She is also the proud guardian of her nephew, a student at M.S. Berkeley High School in Ferguson. Whether delivering meals to seniors or mentoring students, Proudie stays grounded in service.
Academic and Professional Excellence
Her professional expertise further supports her work. Proudie holds a B.S. in Elementary Education, an M.A. in Mental Health Counseling, and is a doctoral candidate at Grambling State University. She is also an active member of the National Association for Developmental Education, the National Alliance of Black School Educators, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
With her mix of legislative wins, personal dedication, and academic strength, Proudie has earned a reputation as a compassionate lawmaker who brings promises to life. She doesn’t just talk about change. She makes it happen.
