Norfolk State alum launches $10M mission for HBCUs

Rod Bell, a proud Norfolk State University graduate, is taking a bold step to support historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). He will ride his custom NSU-themed motorcycle across the United States, visiting more than 100 campuses. His goal is to raise over $10 million for scholarships, facilities, and student resources.

Bell’s campaign, called RIDE4MYHBCUs, is not just about awareness. “It’s about motivating those to give and donate—and inspiring alumni to give back to their schools,” he said. He believes that HBCU pride should go beyond homecomings and football games, extending to year-round financial support that ensures these institutions thrive.

Inspiring alumni giving to secure HBCU futures

The plan is simple yet powerful. Bell aims to gather 1,006 alumni donors, each contributing $106 to their alma mater. That would raise $106,636 for each HBCU, adding up to more than $11.3 million. This funding would help campuses stay competitive by improving facilities, providing scholarships, and supporting student programs.

Bell came up with the idea after seeing how many HBCUs still struggle financially. He believes waiting for political solutions will not solve the problem. Instead, he calls on the HBCU community to take action themselves. “We show up for the parties and tailgates,” Bell said. “Now, show up for your school in a different way. Give $106—and challenge five friends to do the same.”

Tour begins but donations start now

Bell’s journey officially begins on August 24, but giving can start right away. Supporters can donate directly to their HBCUs, adding “RIDE4MYHBCUs” in the payment memo. Others can contribute to Bell’s NSU endowment fund through its own donation link. Corporate sponsors can also get involved by contacting ride4myhbcus@gmail.com.

For Bell, the ride is about more than personal achievement. “This journey isn’t about me—it’s about us and the future of our HBCUs,” he said. “Let’s make history together.”
