Taylor Townsend earns top WTA doubles spot

Taylor Townsend is now ranked World No. 1 in women’s doubles. Her new title became official when she and her partner Shuai Zhang reached the final at the Mubadala Citi DC Open in Washington, D.C.

At age 29, Townsend became the first mother to ever earn this title in women’s tennis history. She reached the milestone just three years after giving birth to her son. Her story stands out in a sport where many women struggle to return to top form after becoming mothers.

A long road back after giving birth

Townsend’s journey to the top wasn’t easy. She gave birth to her son, Adyn Aubrey Johnson, in 2021. After that, she missed much of the 2022 season. But by 2023, she began competing regularly again.

By 2025, she had built up a strong winning record. She called her journey “the most satisfying” of her life and said becoming No. 1 after becoming a mother made it even more special. She added that her major wins after motherhood made her success even sweeter.

Townsend’s impressive doubles record

Over the past year, Townsend collected several big wins in doubles. She won the Australian Open with Katerina Siniakova, one of the most respected doubles players in the game.

She also won the WTA 1000 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and last year’s DC Open with Asia Muhammad. To finish the 2024 season, she and Siniakova made it to the final of the WTA Finals in Riyadh.

Now, Townsend replaces Siniakova at the top of the rankings, ending her 46-week run at No. 1. Townsend also becomes the 50th woman ever and only the 13th American to reach this top spot.

Support from other tennis stars

Many in the tennis world have shown support and pride in Townsend’s achievement. American tennis star Coco Gauff shared how happy she was to see Townsend rise to No. 1.

Gauff said, “I’ve always considered her one of the best doubles players.” She added that it was exciting to see the rankings now reflect that. Madison Keys and Ben Shelton also praised Townsend on social media.

A new symbol for athlete mothers

Townsend’s win sends a strong message to mothers in professional sports. Many female athletes face challenges returning to peak performance after childbirth. Townsend’s story shows that it is possible and even powerful to rise again.

She said reaching No. 1 felt like a dream and will always be one of the biggest moments in her career. Her journey offers hope and inspiration for the next generation of athlete mothers.
