Venus Williams makes tennis history at 45

Venus Williams proved once again why she is a legend. At age 45, she won a singles match at the 2025 DC Open. With this victory, she becomes the second-oldest woman in tennis history to win a tour-level singles match.

She beat 23-year-old Peyton Stearns in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Williams hadn’t played an official singles match since 2024. Her last win came in August 2023. Fans cheered as she showed strength, focus, and a powerful game.

Big serves and fearless strokes return

Williams controlled the match using her classic big serves and heavy groundstrokes. Stearns admitted she was surprised by how well Venus moved on the court.

“She played some ball tonight,” said Stearns. “She was moving really well, which I wasn’t expecting too much, honestly. Her serves were just on fire.”

Even after a long break, Venus returned to the court in top form. The seven-time Grand Slam champion said training was tough, but she never gave up.

Mental strength and comeback journey

After the win, Venus shared how her journey was filled with doubt and growth. “Each week that I was training, I was, like, ‘Oh, my God, I don’t know if I’m good enough yet,’” she said.

She also said some weeks gave her hope, while others made her feel unsure. But she kept praying for good health and believed in herself.

“A lot of this for me is being able to come back and try to play at a level… and to play healthy,” she added.

Facing the next challenge

Venus will now play Magdalena Frech, a 27-year-old fifth seed. The tennis star knows it won’t be easy. But she’s ready to fight.

“It’s not easy. It won’t be easy. It’s not easy for anyone out here,” she said. “But I’m up for that.”

Even at 45, Venus isn’t slowing down. Her love for the game and fierce spirit continue to inspire people around the world.

Legacy and record books

The only player older than Venus to win a singles match is Martina Navratilova. She was 47 when she set the record in 2004.

Now, Venus is right behind her. She’s adding more history to a career filled with major titles, business wins, and groundbreaking moments.

As fans cheer her on, Venus Williams remains a powerful symbol of greatness, resilience, and the belief that it’s never too late to shine.
