Beyoncé has honored actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner with a heartfelt message on her official website. The tribute came shortly after news broke that Warner had drowned in Costa Rica.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner Dies in Costa Rica at 53

Warner tragically died on July 20 while swimming at Playa Cocles in Costa Rica’s Limón province. He was reportedly caught in a powerful current while vacationing with his wife and daughter.

Though bystanders pulled him from the water, paramedics could not revive him. The Costa Rican Red Cross confirmed another man involved in the same incident was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Warner’s death shocked fans around the world. His role as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show made him a household name from 1984 to 1994.
