Sloane Stephens Earns Spot Among Elite Humanitarian Finalists
Sloane Stephens has been named one of three finalists for the Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award at the 2025 Sports Humanitarian Awards. The prestigious award honors athletes who use their fame and influence to create positive change.
Stephens, a Grand Slam tennis champion, is the only Black woman finalist in this year’s lineup. She is recognized alongside NBA star CJ McCollum and NHL player Alex Ovechkin for their work in giving back to their communities.
Tennis Star Recognized for Impact Off the Court
Stephens’ humanitarian work includes education programs, scholarships, and mental health support through the Sloane Stephens Foundation. Her foundation, based in the U.S., especially supports underserved youth.
Through tennis and learning programs, Stephens has helped thousands of children stay in school and stay active. Her efforts stand as a powerful example of what athletes can do beyond their sports careers.
ESPN Shines Spotlight on Athletes Driving Social Change
The 2025 Sports Humanitarian Awards, hosted by ESPN, will take place on July 15 in Hollywood. The ceremony will be held at the Ray Dolby Ballroom, one day before the 2025 ESPYS.
Kevin Martinez, ESPN’s Vice President of Corporate Citizenship, said, “We believe in the power of sports to bring people together, inspire hope, and drive real change.” He added that the awards “honor athletes who lead with purpose.”
The Only Black Woman Finalist in a Star-Studded Lineup
Among all the individual finalists announced, Stephens is the only Black woman highlighted this year. Her presence not only represents excellence but also diversity in the humanitarian spotlight.
Her nomination is especially powerful in a year where visibility for Black women in sports philanthropy remains limited. Her work shows that giving back can go hand-in-hand with professional success.
Other Big Names and Categories in the 2025 Awards
In addition to Stephens, finalists for other categories include major sports teams like the Los Angeles Clippers, New York Yankees, and Indianapolis Colts.
Michele Kang has been named the Sports Philanthropist of the Year, while Billy Bean will receive the Stuart Scott ENSPIRE Award. Youth leaders and brands like Cheez-It and Fanatics also made the list.
Celebration Tied to the 2025 ESPYS Week
The Sports Humanitarian Awards are part of ESPN’s annual ESPYS Week, designed to honor not just athletic skill, but also community leadership. The ESPYS will air live on ABC on July 16 at 8 p.m. ET/PT from the Dolby Theatre.
Money raised from the event will support the Stuart Scott Memorial Cancer Research Fund, helping continue the legacy of the late sports broadcaster and advocate.
