Quinta Brunson speaks out after her divorce was shared without her consent

Quinta Brunson is known for controlling her narrative. But when news of her divorce from Kevin Jay Anik surfaced online in March 2025, she hadn’t spoken a word publicly about it. Now, the “Abbott Elementary” creator is opening up for the first time.

In her new Bustle cover story, Brunson expressed disappointment over how the news got out. “I didn’t announce anything,” she said firmly. “People have this idea that people in the public eye want the public to know their every move. None of us do. I promise you.”

The internet moved before she could

Though court documents listed “irreconcilable differences,” Brunson said the hardest part wasn’t the separation itself—it was losing control of her story.

The 35-year-old star had carefully guarded her relationship since she quietly wed Anik in 2021. Some fans didn’t even know she was married until her 2022 Emmys speech, when she called Anik “the most supportive man I’ve ever known.”

Now that she’s speaking on her own terms, Brunson made it clear she never wanted the details made public. “It’s just that that’s public record information,” she explained. “I hate all of it.”

Privacy is power for this Emmy winner

During the interview, Brunson shared how challenging it is to balance fame and privacy. “Even if you don’t give a lot, people want whatever they can get,” she said. “And will take whatever they can get.”

She’s still figuring things out, saying she’s in a “transitional time.” But the actress is finding comfort in setting emotional boundaries. “You do have to tune it out,” she said about outside opinions. “Those are invisible voices that aren’t in your home with you.”

A new chapter and a fresh cut

Brunson recently marked the moment with a big chop, which she described as liberating. She’s now focused on moving forward and nourishing herself—“watering her own garden,” as she put it.

Though she didn’t choose to share this news early on, Brunson is making sure her voice leads the next phase of her journey. She’s doing it with honesty, peace, and full control.
