Judge Rules Medicaid Cuts Were Illegal and Racially Motivated
New York Attorney General Letitia James has scored another major legal win against the Trump administration. A federal judge ruled that millions of dollars cut from Medicaid-related health grants must be restored.
U.S. District Judge William Young called the funding cuts racially discriminatory. He ordered the federal government to return over $4.5 million in grants to New York-based health projects. The judge described the actions as “arbitrary and unlawful” and said he had “never seen government racial discrimination like this” in his four decades on the bench.
Letitia James Led Multi-State Lawsuit to Protect DEI and Health Grants
James filed the lawsuit earlier this year with support from 15 other state attorneys general. The case challenged the Trump administration’s decision to cancel previously approved research grants.
The terminated grants focused on topics like racial inequity, LGBTQ+ health, COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy, and health disparities. Projects were reportedly targeted based on keywords like “race,” “barrier,” “inequity,” and “minority.”
“These grants were helping people who are often ignored,” James said in a past statement. “Cutting them was not just wrong—it was illegal.”
A Judge’s Words Strike Hard at the Heart of the Issue
Judge Young, appointed in 1985 by President Reagan, did not hold back during the hearing. He strongly criticized the administration’s motives.
“Have we no shame?” he asked after explaining that the cuts had clearly been aimed at minority communities. His ruling also voided 11 internal memos from the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Health and Human Services.
These memos were used to justify cutting funding based on political language rather than scientific need or public benefit.
A Long Record of Wins Against the Trump Administration
This ruling adds to James’ growing list of courtroom victories against former President Donald Trump and his allies. She previously shut down the Trump Foundation for misuse of charity funds.
In 2023, she also won a civil fraud case that resulted in Trump being fined $454 million. More recently, she joined multiple lawsuits challenging the administration’s attacks on DEI in schools and harmful tariff policies.
Each case reinforces her commitment to fairness, public health, and equality.
Why Letitia James Matters to the Fight for Justice
Letitia James is the first Black woman to serve as New York’s attorney general. Her leadership has inspired many who believe in equity and accountability.
Her efforts continue to protect vulnerable communities and ensure federal resources reach those who need them most.
This latest victory proves what many already know—James isn’t backing down. And she’s not fighting alone.
