A Powerful Memoir That Sparked Interest

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson earned $2.1 million for her memoir Lovely One. The deal was revealed through the Supreme Court’s yearly financial disclosures released on June 16. The publishing house Random House gave her a $2 million advance for the book, which came out in September 2024.

The memoir shares Justice Jackson’s journey to becoming the first Black woman on the United States Supreme Court. Her story quickly became a source of inspiration for many, and readers rushed to learn more about the woman behind the robe.

A Journey Worth the Price

Her rise to the nation’s highest court was not easy. In fact, Jackson told NPR that hard work, not just intelligence, was the secret to her success. “You can’t always control whether you’re the smartest person in the room,” she said. “But you can commit to being the hardest worker.”

At the time of her book release, she was still serving as a full-time Justice while touring to promote Lovely One. Her annual salary is over $300,000, but this book deal gave her a major financial boost. Readers, especially Black women, have praised her honesty, determination, and resilience.

Other Justices Who Have Written Books

Justice Jackson is not the only member of the Supreme Court with a book deal. Justice Neil Gorsuch published Overruled: The Human Toll of Too Much Law in 2024. Justice Sonia Sotomayor has also written several books, including works for children and adults. Many of her titles are now available in both English and Spanish.

Books like these give the public a rare look into the lives and values of the country’s top judges. However, not every Justice has used this opportunity to uplift and inspire.

A Sharp Contrast With Clarence Thomas

Justice Jackson’s openness stands in contrast with Justice Clarence Thomas. Over the years, Thomas has faced backlash for failing to report expensive gifts and luxury trips. Reports say he received flights on private jets and free stays at high-end resorts.

He also accepted real estate from a major Republican donor, Harlan Crow. That deal allowed Thomas’s family to live on three properties rent-free. Although lawmakers have called for his impeachment, Thomas still sits on the bench today.

A Legacy Built on Hard Work

Justice Jackson’s story is different. Her rise was built on talent, preparation, and hard work. She has inspired a new generation of readers with her words. Her message is clear: success does not come easy, but it is possible with effort and focus.

Lovely One is more than a book. It is a celebration of what can happen when a Black woman takes her seat at the table and dares to share her truth.
