Helping Staten Island Youth Aim Higher in School

A deli owner in Staten Island is changing the way young people think about school. Wail “Wally” Alselwi, known online as “Island Ock,” started a reward program called “Grades for Grabs.” Through it, he gives students prizes for bringing in their report cards and showing improved grades.

What began as a simple idea in 2023 has now grown into a community-wide movement. Children from Staten Island and across New York City visit Zack’s Finest Deli & Grocery with proof of their academic efforts. Some leave with snacks, others with gift cards—and students with straight-A averages even receive $100 bills.

A Viral Moment Sparked a Movement

The idea came from a playful bet between Alselwi and a local 12-year-old named Zamier Davis. If Davis improved his grades, he’d earn a free milkshake. When he succeeded, Alselwi filmed it and shared it online. That video went viral and inspired the deli owner to offer the same deal to every student who walks through his doors.

Since then, Alselwi has turned this one-time gesture into an ongoing campaign. Students don’t need to wait for report card season. As long as they show proof of progress, they’re welcomed and celebrated.

Motivation That Builds More Than Just Smiles

Alselwi believes small rewards can build big confidence. “Many kids lack encouragement,” he wrote on the fundraiser page. “Sometimes, all it takes is a small incentive to push them toward greatness.” One video shows a middle schooler named Bryant receiving $100 for his improved grades. He used part of it to buy a Mother’s Day gift.

The program helps more than students—it strengthens family ties and builds character. The joy on each child’s face shows that they feel seen, valued, and motivated.

Community Support Keeps the Program Growing

More than 484,000 people now follow Alselwi’s efforts online. With growing attention came growing needs. To keep the rewards flowing, he launched a GoFundMe campaign that raised over $99,000 of its $110,000 goal. The money helps buy snacks, school supplies, and gift cards.

Supporters can also help by purchasing “Island Ock” merchandise. Every item sold helps continue the work of lifting kids up and helping them succeed.

Looking Toward the Future

Alselwi’s long-term goal is bigger than snacks and smiles. He wants to help shape a culture where kids believe in their potential. By celebrating academic success in a fun and public way, he’s showing young people that learning matters—and that hard work pays off.

He hopes other business owners join in, creating safe spaces for students and raising the bar for what youth can expect from their communities. For many kids, that $5 reward or $100 bill is more than a prize. It’s a message: you matter, and we believe in you.
