Ambition to Lead House Oversight Committee
Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) is aiming to become the next ranking member of the U.S. House Oversight Committee. This committee plays a key role in watching over the federal government and holding leaders accountable, including the president.
Currently serving as the Vice Ranking Member, Crockett announced her plans publicly through a letter on social media platform X. She said Americans want a stronger and more energetic fight for their rights.
Crockett said, “I formally announce my candidacy for Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform—with a focus on standing up for American families, defending the Constitution and the rule of law, and ensuring the government serves the people, not the privileged few.”
Following a Legacy of Leadership
The position Crockett seeks was last held by Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA), who passed away in May 2024. Connolly was elected to the role in 2023. Crockett sees this role as a chance to bring steady leadership during what she calls “unprecedented times.”
She wrote, “These are not normal times—and this cannot be a business-as-usual moment.” She believes the committee must act boldly to restore trust and order.
The House Oversight Committee is known for its power to check the executive branch. This makes the role crucial in maintaining government transparency and fairness.
A Voice for the People and Bold Leadership
Since joining the committee, Crockett has made her voice heard. She often speaks on issues that others avoid. Her strong stands have gained attention on social media, sometimes sparking viral moments.
In May 2024, Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene attacked Crockett over her appearance during a hearing. This incident led to the viral phrase “bleach blonde bad built butch body.” Despite this, Crockett continues to defend her views with confidence.
She has also stood up for the LGBTQ+ community when other lawmakers criticized transgender Americans.
Responding to a National Crisis
Crockett says the current political climate demands new tactics. She pointed to the Trump administration’s refusal to follow court orders and respect Congress.
She said, “The magnitude of these unprecedented times warrants a resistance and tactics never before seen. We must pull back the curtain on the unmitigated chaos under Trump 2.0 and translate our findings to the American people in a way they can digest.”
Her leadership goals focus on protecting American families, defending the Constitution, and making sure the government works for all people—not just the powerful.
