A group of Texas-based Black women is shaking up the wellness space in the best way. What started as long nights of drinking and rough mornings after has blossomed into a movement of mindful living. Meet Ashlyn Knox, Darean Rhodes, and Shanna Watkins, the founders of Sensori, a non-alcoholic wellness brand made for people who want to feel good without the hangovers.
Today, their brand represents more than just a product. It’s a symbol of sisterhood, self-care, and taking charge of your mental health.
Sensori Was Born From Friendship and Wellness Goals
The idea for Sensori came when these three best friends realized their lifestyles were shifting. Like many people in 2020, the weight of the pandemic and the uncertainty of the world pushed them to think deeper about their habits.
Shanna Watkins, one of the co-founders, shared how her wellness journey began after years of partying hard. “I’ve always been the friend that, when I get drunk, I get blackout,” she said. “As I started to get older, I got passionate about wellness.” This love for wellness created a bond between the women and led them to rethink how they socialized and celebrated.
The three women spent time online working out, reading, and attending church together over Zoom. This sisterhood would later become the foundation for their business idea.
Mindful Choices and Natural Ingredients Inspired Their Product
It wasn’t just about quitting alcohol. The trio wanted to replace it with something good for the body and mind. Watkins, while working in public relations for a coffee alternative brand, discovered the world of adaptogens. These are herbs and mushrooms like lion’s mane, reishi, and ashwagandha, believed to help reduce stress and improve mental clarity.
A Dry January challenge in 2023 turned Watkins’ curiosity into a serious business idea. She began testing drink recipes using these adaptogens. The results were so good that she called her friends to get involved.
For Ashlyn Knox, the timing was perfect. “I had already started dabbling in herbs after getting my ADHD diagnosis,” Knox said. She wasn’t happy with the medications she’d been prescribed and began exploring natural alternatives like lion’s mane and ashwagandha to support her focus and mental well-being.
Turning Struggles With Mental Health Into Empowering Solutions
Mental health was another powerful reason behind Sensori. Co-founder Darean Rhodes opened up about her battle with anxiety and depression in 2019 and 2020. Instead of relying on prescriptions, she searched for holistic ways to heal.
“I hate to say that 2020 was a pivotal time, but for me, it really was,” Rhodes shared. She turned to fitness, meditation, and adaptogens as part of her wellness routine. When Watkins pitched the idea for Sensori, Rhodes didn’t hesitate. “Let me know when you have the product,” she told her friend.
Once Watkins perfected the drink blend, the women officially came together to launch Sensori. Their experiences with anxiety, stress, and wellness made them the perfect team to create a brand that speaks to others walking similar paths.
Sensori Is More Than a Drink It’s a Wellness Movement
Sensori isn’t just about sipping on alcohol-free drinks. It’s about building a lifestyle around intentional choices, community, and mental clarity. The founders created the brand for what they call “feel-good seekers”—people who want to celebrate, relax, and connect without relying on alcohol.
The drinks are packed with plant-based ingredients designed to calm the mind and uplift the spirit. From herbs like kanna to mushrooms like reishi, every ingredient was chosen with care.
The women behind Sensori believe the brand reflects where they are in life now. They’ve moved past the late nights and hangovers to embrace mindful, health-first living—and they’re inviting others to do the same.
Why Sensori Matters for Black Women’s Wellness Spaces
In a world where Black women’s wellness often gets overlooked, Sensori stands out. It speaks to the need for safe, healthy ways for Black women to gather, heal, and celebrate without pressure.
Sisterhood played a huge role in making Sensori a reality. The founders leaned on each other through some of life’s hardest moments. Now, they’re offering a product born from love, resilience, and the power of Black female friendship.
As more people move toward sober-curious lifestyles, Sensori provides a thoughtful, culturally relevant option. It’s proof that healing, wellness, and entrepreneurship can go hand in hand.
