A mother and daughter duo made history in their own family with a once-in-a-lifetime double celebration. Olivia Omega and her daughter Malia Logan graduated from college on the same day — and even launched their first book together that very afternoon.
The pair described it as an “incredible feeling” and a joyful moment they never planned. Their story quickly touched hearts across the country.
Graduating Together Was a Beautiful Surprise
Both Olivia Omega and Malia Logan walked across the graduation stage at Belhaven University just moments apart. What made the day even more remarkable was that it wasn’t part of any long-term plan.
“Nothing that we planned,” Omega told Fox 40 News. She explained that while searching for an MBA program in Entrepreneurship, she discovered Belhaven offered exactly what she needed. By coincidence, the timing of her graduation lined up perfectly with her daughter’s.
“It was a really great surprise,” Omega said, reflecting on how their paths naturally came together. The two balanced school assignments, hobbies, and everyday life while pushing each other to finish strong.
Sharing Homework, Laughter, and Life Lessons
Logan expressed how much joy came from this unique experience. The mother-daughter pair often found themselves sitting in the same room, tackling homework side by side.
“It was purely just excitement and joy,” Logan shared. “I never thought we’d both be in the room doing homework. It’s been a joy ride and shows how close we really are.”
The experience not only strengthened their bond but also highlighted the power of supporting each other through challenges. Their journey speaks to the beauty of Black womanhood, faith, and family unity.
Releasing a Memoir That Honors Their Journey
On the very same day they graduated, Omega and Logan launched their book titled Through Her Eyes: Mother and Daughter Parallel Perspectives on Love, Loss, Blackness, Purpose, and Faith. The memoir gives readers a raw and honest look at their relationship, shared experiences, and lessons learned.
Logan explained that the book covers many layers of a mother-daughter bond. “We really just wanted to explore different topics, different emotions, and the things that connect a mom and a daughter.”
Each chapter offers a unique topic — from love and loss to faith and identity as Black women. Both authors take turns sharing their thoughts and memories on each subject.
Inspiring Black Women and Families Everywhere
Omega and Logan’s story has quickly inspired other families, especially Black women navigating life’s challenges together. Their memoir isn’t just about their bond — it also shines a light on the importance of storytelling, healing, and mutual support in Black communities.
“We take all these topics and each share our experiences,” Logan said. “How we’ve helped each other and what we’ve learned along the way.”
Their accomplishment joins the ranks of other recent inspiring stories, like twin sisters topping their class as valedictorian and salutatorian, and a mother who donated a kidney to her daughter before graduating nursing school with her. These moments reflect the resilience, strength, and pride within Black families.
Final Thoughts: A Testament to Black Womanhood, Family, and Faith
This double celebration reminds us of the unbreakable bonds between mothers and daughters. It highlights how education, faith, and love can help overcome obstacles and build lasting legacies.
Omega and Logan’s memoir and graduation milestone will inspire other Black women to cherish their relationships, pursue their dreams, and tell their stories.
