Gabrielle Union Shares Honest Feelings About Her Surrogacy Experience

Gabrielle Union is speaking her truth about a deeply personal topic. In a new interview with Marie Claire, the actress opened up about the emotional challenges she faced during her surrogacy journey.

Union, 52, revealed that having someone else carry her child wasn’t an easy decision. In fact, she admitted it felt like a painful reminder of what her body couldn’t do. “For me, it felt like failure,” she confessed. “My body failed. It just felt like such a public humiliation.”

Why Surrogacy Was So Difficult for Union to Accept

Though surrogacy has given Union the blessing of motherhood, the process wasn’t simple for her emotionally. She described it as feeling like a “cuckold,” having to watch someone else do something she desperately wanted to do herself.

Union explained that each surrogacy story is different. She also spoke about how people often judge non-traditional paths to parenthood. “It’s like any time there’s any kind of variance in the experience, it’s, ‘See, I told you. You shouldn’t explore this option to expand your family,’” she shared.

Finding Strength and Power in Her Motherhood Journey

Despite the struggles, Union made it clear that becoming a mother was one of her proudest moments. She welcomed her daughter, Kaavia, in 2018 through surrogacy with husband and NBA legend Dwyane Wade.

Union admitted that while she’ll likely never feel complete peace with her choice, she is endlessly grateful for the woman who carried her child. “It’s just one of those things where it’s such a personal journey that I may never know full peace with,” she said.

Embracing Motherhood Later in Life

For Union, starting her motherhood journey later in life has given her a new sense of confidence and self-acceptance. “Once I became a mom and I got older, I was like, ‘Nobody can tell me s—t,’” she boldly told Marie Claire.

Now, she’s balancing life as a mom, a stepmom to four children, and a busy career in Hollywood. Union has always used her platform to speak honestly about topics many women feel pressured to hide.

What’s Next for Gabrielle Union

Even with her personal challenges, Union’s career continues to thrive. She’s set to star in two upcoming films: the horror flick Casket Girls and the indie drama Forbidden Fruits.

Fans admire Union not only for her acting but also for her openness about motherhood, mental health, and identity. Her latest interview is another reminder of her courage in sharing stories that inspire other Black women.
