Dawn Staley Gets Her Own Statue in Front of Colonial Life Arena
A powerful bronze statue of Coach Dawn Staley now stands in front of Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, South Carolina. The statue was unveiled on April 30 to kick off Dawn Staley Month, a newly declared celebration of the basketball icon.
The monument honors her incredible career as a coach and player and her role as a leader in the community. Local leaders, fans, and former players gathered to witness the moment and honor her legacy. Staley, known for guiding the South Carolina Gamecocks to multiple national titles, was visibly moved during the ceremony.
South Carolina Declares May as Dawn Staley Month
Following the unveiling, the city officially declared May as Dawn Staley Month. This recognition celebrates her lasting impact not just in sports, but in empowering young girls and women across the country.
A press release from the City of Columbia described her as “a symbol of excellence, resilience, and pride for South Carolina.” Mayor Daniel Rickenmann, along with community leaders, praised Staley for her work both on and off the court. Her new statue joins the one of her former player, A’ja Wilson, just half a mile away.
Staley Hopes the Statue Inspires Young Girls to Dream Bigger
During her emotional speech, Staley reflected on how she never dreamed of having a statue built in her honor. She admitted, “Having a statue in my image was never a goal or even a thought.”
What matters most to her is the message the statue sends to girls everywhere. “I hope she sees that I was a champion for equity and equality,” Staley said. “That I stood proudly, not as someone perfect or extraordinary, but as a regular girl who used her gifts to open doors.”
More Than Basketball: Staley’s Leadership Extends Far Beyond the Court
Dawn Staley is not just a winning coach—she’s a strong advocate for equality and community growth. The tribute highlights her leadership and her efforts to lift future generations. It was built in partnership with the Gender Diversity Arts Initiative and Statues for Equality.
The statue is a reminder of her work empowering others and pushing for change. Community leaders say it represents more than championships—it tells a story of purpose, courage, and legacy.
Breaking Records and Leading a Book Tour
Earlier this year, Staley became the highest-paid women’s basketball coach in the country with a $25 million contract. Her Gamecocks team recently secured another national title, adding to her already legendary status.
Now, she’s taking her story on the road. Staley announced her “Uncommon Favor” book tour, which includes stops in New York, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina. She’s meeting fans and sharing life lessons far beyond basketball.
