A Historic Appointment for Ghana’s Financial Sector

Matilda Asante-Asiedu has been named the 2nd Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana. This makes her the third woman in Ghana’s history to hold such a powerful position in the nation’s central bank.

Her new role will see her take charge of banking operations, financial supervision, and ensuring the country’s financial stability. These duties are crucial to keeping Ghana’s economy strong and well-regulated.

From Award-Winning Journalist to Financial Leader

Before entering finance, Mrs. Asante-Asiedu was a celebrated journalist. She served as the Editor of JOYNEWS, one of Ghana’s most influential news platforms. During that time, she helped shape national conversations, especially as Ghana shifted into multi-party democracy.

Her work was also recognized internationally. She received awards from the BBC World Service and the Ghana Journalists Association. Her time in media laid the foundation for her confident and impactful leadership.

A Bold Career Change That Paid Off

Fifteen years ago, she made a bold move into banking. She became a founding executive at Access Bank Ghana, and quickly rose through the ranks. She held top roles such as Head of Corporate Communications, Head of Exclusive Banking, and later Group Head for Retail Banking.

These positions allowed her to design products, lead strategy, and support key sectors like NGOs and embassies. Her work helped the bank grow and reach more people, especially those often left out of formal finance.

Championing Women Through Financial Inclusion

One of her proudest achievements is the “W Initiative” at Access Bank. This award-winning program supported thousands of women with training, loans, and business help. Many women were able to grow their businesses and gain financial independence.

“Women across the country saw real change through this initiative,” said a bank representative. “She believed in lifting others as she rose.”

The program earned praise from international bodies like The Banker Magazine and the World Economic Magazine.

Leading Digital Banking Innovation in Ghana

Matilda also led key partnerships that brought digital tools to everyday Ghanaians. She worked with MTN to launch a smartphone financing program. Now, millions can own smartphones on flexible payment plans. This supports Ghana’s push toward digital growth.

She also helped create a deal with Autochek, making it easier for people to buy cars through bank credit. Her focus has always been to make finance easier and more accessible for all.

Academic Excellence Behind Her Success

Matilda’s education is as strong as her career. She holds an MBA from GIMPA Business School and a Master’s in Journalism from Cardiff University. She also completed executive programs at top schools like Oxford, Wharton, and Marquette.

She is also a Chartered Banker and teaches part-time at the University of Professional Studies in Accra. Her mix of learning and experience sets her apart.

A Role Model for the Next Generation

As 2nd Deputy Governor, Matilda Asante-Asiedu is not just breaking barriers—she’s building bridges for others. Her journey from the newsroom to the central bank proves that with hard work and purpose, women can lead anywhere.

Her appointment supports Ghana’s growing efforts to promote gender inclusion in leadership. President John Mahama’s administration has been praised for this bold and historic decision.

“Matilda’s story is not only inspiring, it’s empowering,” one stakeholder said. “She shows us what’s possible when women lead.”
