Taraji Shares the Raw Truth About Single Parenting
Taraji P. Henson recently opened up about the emotional toll of single motherhood. On a powerful episode of Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson’s “IMO” podcast, the actress shared deeply personal memories.
“I wouldn’t wish being a single parent on my worst enemy,” she said. She recalled nights when her son, Marcell, was crying and she had no one to help. “There was no honey. I was honey,” she explained, describing how everything rested on her shoulders.
The Heavy Burden Black Women Often Carry
During the podcast, Craig Robinson asked why Black women carry so much responsibility. Henson responded honestly. For her, single motherhood was normal. Her mother and grandmother were also solo parents.
“Unlearning that trauma is where I am now,” she shared. Her words touched on a cycle many Black women know too well—doing it all alone, generation after generation.
Moments of Exhaustion and Thoughts of Giving Up
Taraji didn’t sugarcoat the struggles. She remembered one moment when her son was four years old and she was completely drained. “I wanted to cry,” she said. That exhaustion left her with dark thoughts.
Still, her strength pushed her forward. “But that’s not in me either,” she continued. “My ancestors go, ‘girl, you better get up.’”
From Pregnant Student to Hollywood Star
Henson became pregnant with Marcell while studying at Howard University. Despite the odds, she pushed through and graduated. She later moved to Los Angeles with just $700 borrowed from loved ones.
His father, her high school sweetheart William LaMarr Johnson, was abusive. She made the tough choice to leave him. Sadly, he was murdered in 2003 when Marcell was just nine years old.
A Promise That Fueled Her Success
Taraji made a quiet promise to her son early on. She would never give up. “He don’t even remember the hard days,” she said. “He remembers the house with the pool.”
That promise gave her fuel. She bet on herself and won. Roles in films like Baby Boy and Hustle & Flow set the stage for her rise. Today, her son is a 30-year-old man building his own path in music.
The Strength Behind the Spotlight
Henson’s story is a reminder that success often comes with sacrifice. Her honesty about single motherhood shines a light on both the pain and power in that journey.
She has not only built a powerful career but raised a young Black man with love, grit, and grace.
