Debbie Allen Leads Free Skating Events to Support Wildfire Victims
Debbie Allen is using her talents to bring joy to families affected by the Los Angeles wildfires.
Through her Debbie Allen Dance Academy, she is offering free skating and dance classes to help families heal and stay strong.
On April 27, Allen will team up with the Sunshine Skate Foundation for another free event under her “Dancing in the Light: Healing with the Arts” series.
Held every two months, the series started in late January, just weeks after wildfires like the Eaton Fire and Palisades Fire caused major damage.
Free Skating and Dance Classes for All Ages
The events are open to everyone aged four and up. No experience is needed.
Families can enjoy lessons like Intro to Roller Skating, Line Dance Roller Skating, Ballroom Roller Skating, and Artistic Dance Skating.
Besides the classes, there will be open skate areas filled with lively music.
Rental skates and protective gear will also be provided free of charge for children and youth.
Top Choreographers Join Forces With Debbie Allen
Allen has brought in some of the biggest names in dance to teach at the events.
Big stars like JaQuel Knight, Laurieann Gibson, Lyrik Cruz, and Phil Wright have all joined, along with DADA master faculty like Karen McDonald.
The traveling series has reached communities across Los Angeles, including Rhimes Performing Arts Center, Pasadena City College, Glendale High School, and The Wallis in Beverly Hills.
Allen’s goal is to bring professional dance and skating lessons directly to the families who need them the most.
A Message of Hope and Resilience Through Movement
Debbie Allen shared her excitement in a statement:
“Dancing In The Light will kick ball change into a day of dancing on skates on Sunday, April 27 at the Rhimes Performing Arts Center. I’m so excited to announce this new edition. Come and bounce with me, Y’ALL! Free skates and classes provided by Sunshine Skate Foundation. Meet me at the rink!!!”
Cory Joseph, Founder of Sunshine Skate Foundation, added:
“Roller skating teaches you resilience. It’s not if you’ll fall, but when. How you get back up is the most important part.”
Through dance, skating, and movement, Debbie Allen and her partners are giving wildfire survivors a place to smile, heal, and rebuild their strength.
