Using Her Olympic Fame to Make a Difference
Gabby Thomas is not just a track star. She’s also a public health advocate with a heart for service. Best known for her blazing speed on the track, the five-time Olympic medalist is now helping underserved neighborhoods grow something beautiful — literally.
Through her new partnership with Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day, Thomas is helping transform vacant lots into thriving community gardens. This project, called “Lots of Compassion,” focuses on building green spaces that offer hope, healing, and togetherness.
“Green spaces give people a place to recharge, to connect, and just feel good,” she said. These gardens are more than just plants. They represent a better future for communities in need.
From Track and Field to Public Health
While Thomas found global fame in the 200-meter sprint, she has always wanted to make a deeper impact. She studied neurobiology and global health at Harvard and later earned a master’s degree in epidemiology.
Her career in public health is just as important to her as her athletic success. She believes that every person should have access to spaces that support mental and physical well-being.
“Built environments are part of the social determinants of health,” Thomas explained. “Lack of parks and gardens can lead to poor health outcomes.”
Growing Gardens and Building Communities
Lots of Compassion is more than a campaign. It’s a movement powered by compassion and care. With this project, Mrs. Meyer’s and Gabby Thomas hope to help people who want to support their communities but don’t know where to start.
The initiative helps fill that gap by planting gardens in areas that need them most. These green spaces become places where children play, neighbors meet, and people breathe easier.
“It’s something so small, like planting a seed, but it can make a big impact,” Thomas said. She knows this from her experience in both clinics and community work.
A Message to Young Girls Watching Her Journey
Thomas wants young girls, especially those from underserved communities, to see her story and be inspired. Her message is simple but powerful: work hard, follow your passion, and give back.
“Don’t let anyone set limits on you,” she said. “Lift the communities you come from and make every space you enter better.”
For Thomas, this garden initiative is just one way to do that. It brings together her love for people, her science background, and her deep desire to uplift others.
Olympic Speed and a Heart for Healing
Gabby Thomas is proof that champions don’t just win medals. They use their voice, their platform, and their power to plant seeds of hope. Whether she’s sprinting across the finish line or planting in a community garden, Thomas is determined to leave the world better than she found it.
“I took that very seriously,” she said. “Leave a place better than you found it. That’s always been my mission.”
