Michelle Obama Sets the Record Straight About Her Marriage
Michelle Obama is speaking up—and she’s not holding back. On a recent episode of Work in Progress with Sophia Bush, the former First Lady addressed rumors about her marriage to Barack Obama.
After skipping a few high-profile events this year, including former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral, whispers began about possible trouble in the Obama household. But Michelle was quick to clear the air. She made it clear that she’s simply making her own choices now.
“It’s nothing more than a grown woman just making a set of decisions herself,” she told Bush.
She explained that people often assume women make choices based on others. “They couldn’t even fathom that I was making a choice for myself,” she added.
“It’s All About Me Now”: Michelle Embraces Personal Freedom
For the first time in decades, Michelle Obama says her choices are no longer tied to her daughters or White House duties. Sasha and Malia are now adults, giving Michelle more time to focus on herself.
“It’s the first time in my life all of my choices are for me,” she said.
That freedom means doing what feels right without having to explain herself. Whether it’s skipping a public event or deciding how to spend her day, she is embracing the joy of making decisions just for her.
Life After the White House: A New Chapter of Fulfillment
Since leaving the White House, the Obamas have stayed busy. Together, they launched Higher Ground Productions. Michelle also started her own podcast called IMO, co-hosted with her brother, Craig Robinson.
In addition, she’s authored bestselling books like Becoming and The Light We Carry. But despite the packed schedule, Michelle says she’s learning to slow down and ask herself important questions.
“Who do I truly want to be every day? Who do I want to have lunch with? Do I want to travel?”
These questions help guide a more joyful and intentional life.
Marriage, Growth, and Real Conversations
Michelle and Barack Obama have been married for 32 years. While they’ve been celebrated as “couple goals,” they’ve also been open about challenges. In A Promised Land, Barack noted that Michelle’s smile was once “more constant.”
In a 2024 interview with Jay Shetty, Michelle shared how they deal with tension in marriage. She believes in staying committed—even when things get tough.
“It’s the choice to figure it out, not to quit when it gets hard,” she said.
This honesty continues to inspire women who look up to her not just as a public figure, but as a real woman navigating love, work, and self-worth.
Living Life on Her Own Terms
Michelle now describes her social life as simple and empowering. “It’s whatever I want,” she told Bush. If a friend calls and invites her somewhere, she’s likely to say yes.
She’s no longer letting others’ expectations shape her days. Instead, she is focused on being the best version of herself—happy, grounded, and free.
And with her signature grace, Michelle is showing Black women everywhere the power of saying: “It’s all about me now.”
