Former First Lady Michelle Obama and NBA superstar Steph Curry have joined forces to create PLEZi Hydration, a new sports drink designed to be healthier than traditional options. The beverage contains less sugar and more nutrients than leading brands while still delivering great taste.
Available in three flavors – Tropical Punch, Orange Mango Twist and Lemon Lime – the drink will first roll out in California Walmart, Albertsons and Safeway stores at $2.29 per bottle. Amazon will also carry the product online.
A Healthier Alternative for Active Lifestyles
PLEZi Hydration contains just 12 grams of sugar compared to 28 grams in typical sports drinks. Each bottle provides 500mg of potassium, 120mg of sodium and 90mg of vitamin C – a more balanced nutritional profile for athletes and active families.
“We’ve created something with smart ingredients and unbeatable flavor,” Curry told CNBC. The four-time NBA champion emphasized the drink contains “no nonsense, no shortcuts” in its formulation.
Combining Nutrition Expertise With Star Power
Obama and Curry first connected through their shared passion for children’s health initiatives. The former First Lady’s PLEZi Nutrition company partnered with Curry to develop the beverage over several months with input from dietitians.
“PLEZi Hydration is packed with more potassium, less sugar, and lower sodium – all while tasting great,” Obama explained. Curry’s wife Ayesha, a trained chef, helped perfect the flavors using her culinary background.
Disrupting the Sports Drink Market
The partners aim to challenge industry giants by offering a truly healthier option. While acknowledging the crowded market, they believe PLEZi’s nutritional advantages will appeal to health-conscious consumers.
The name PLEZi comes from the Creole word for “fun,” reflecting the brand’s focus on enjoyable, responsible nutrition. Initial distribution will focus on West Coast markets before potential national expansion.
