Tyra Banks and her mother, Carolyn London, turned heads at the ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood Awards on February 25. The supermodel and entrepreneur, honored with the first-ever Luminary Spotlight Award, arrived in style, walking the red carpet alongside the woman who has supported her from the very beginning—her mother.

A Glamorous Mother-Daughter Moment

Banks, the March/April 2025 ESSENCE cover star, and London made a striking pair as they stepped out in coordinated looks. Their elegant presence stole the show, proving once again that confidence and style run in the family.

The duo’s red carpet moment wasn’t just about fashion. It was a symbol of their unbreakable bond. Carolyn London has played a key role in Banks’ journey, from navigating the fashion industry to becoming a powerhouse in Hollywood. The two have always uplifted each other, and this night was no different.

Tyra Banks Accepts the Luminary Spotlight Award

At the event, Tyra Banks was honored with the Luminary Spotlight Award, recognizing her lasting impact on fashion, television, and business. From breaking barriers as a Victoria’s Secret Angel to creating America’s Next Top Model, Banks has left an undeniable mark.

More than 50 international versions of America’s Next Top Model have aired, launching the careers of stars like Eva Marcille, Yaya DaCosta, and Winnie Harlow. The show’s influence proves Banks’ commitment to giving aspiring models—especially Black women—a platform to shine.

A Career of Breaking Barriers

Banks has always been a trailblazer. As one of the first Black supermodels to dominate magazine covers and runway shows, she shattered industry norms. But her success didn’t stop at modeling. She became a business mogul, television producer, and actress, constantly pushing the boundaries of what Black women can achieve in entertainment.

Her return to modeling at age 50—after walking in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show revival—made waves online. She credited her mother for encouraging her, saying:

“My mama said, ‘You’re not just walking for you this time. You’re walking for Black women. You’re walking for older women.’”

The moment went viral, reminding everyone that Banks is still a force in the industry.

Carolyn London’s Influence on Banks’ Success

Banks’ success wouldn’t be the same without Carolyn London’s guidance. As a single mother, London pushed back against the industry’s limiting beliefs about Black models. She refused to let her daughter be overlooked.

London once shared:

“She was constantly told that Black models didn’t sell magazines, that Black models don’t get advertising campaigns. One thing after another. A trait we both have is, ‘Don’t tell us that you can’t do something.’ There’s always a way in.”

Her words reflect the resilience that has defined Banks’ career.

What’s Next for Tyra Banks?

Banks is officially returning to modeling, with plans to sign with agencies in Sydney, Paris, and New York. She’s ready to take on the fashion world again—this time, on her own terms.

With her mother by her side and a lifetime of achievements behind her, Banks continues to inspire Black women across the world.
