Searit Huluf Made History as Pixar’s First Black Woman Director

Last year, Searit Huluf made history as the first Black woman to direct a stop-motion short film for Pixar. Her groundbreaking project, Self, premiered on Disney+ in 2024, marking a significant milestone in the animation industry. This achievement highlighted the growing influence of Black women in a field where they have been historically underrepresented.

Huluf, an Ethiopian-American filmmaker, was quickly recognized as a rising star. Her work on Self earned her a spot on Variety’s 2024 ‘Top 10 Animators to Watch’ list. This accolade not only celebrated her talent but also underscored the importance of diversity in animation.

Bringing Stop-Motion Animation to Pixar

Pixar is renowned for its cutting-edge 3D animation, but Self introduced a bold new direction. The film utilized stop-motion animation, a meticulous art form where animators move physical objects frame by frame. This technique has been used in classics like The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline.

For Huluf, stop-motion was a dream come true. Self explored themes of self-discovery and personal growth, blending heartfelt storytelling with stunning visuals. Her passion for this medium shone through, making Self a standout project in Pixar’s portfolio.

A Creative Powerhouse in Animation

Huluf is more than a director—she’s a creative force. A self-proclaimed “blerd” (Black nerd), anime lover, and foodie, she brought a unique perspective to animation. Her love for storytelling was evident in Self, which promised to be the start of an incredible career.

By achieving this milestone, Huluf kept stop-motion animation alive while opening doors for more Black creatives. Her success was a major step forward in an industry that still struggles with diversity.

Stream Self on Disney+ Today

If you missed it last year, now is the perfect time to witness history. Self is still available on Disney+, along with The Making of Self, a behind-the-scenes look at the film’s creation. Searit Huluf’s work is proof that Black women are shaping the future of animation.
