The 2025 NAACP Image Awards brought together the biggest names in Black entertainment, politics, and activism. This year’s ceremony celebrated outstanding portrayals of Black life in film, television, music, and literature while honoring the organization’s legacy. The night was filled with powerful speeches, heartfelt tributes, and historic wins.
Keke Palmer’s Speech on Self-Worth and Community Support
Keke Palmer, the winner of the Entertainer of the Year award, delivered a moving speech about the importance of celebrating Black talent on its own terms. She emphasized that her career was built by her community, not by mainstream approval.
“I just want to say it’s so important that we come here together and celebrate one another with one another,” Palmer said. “Nobody has uplifted me more than you all, the people in this room.”
She rejected the idea that success requires validation from outside the Black community. “It’s important to remember that what we choose and what we deem as important is enough.” She ended with wisdom from actress Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor: “You don’t always have to ask for a seat at nobody’s table. Just make your own table with your folks.”
Kamala Harris’ Message of Hope and Resilience
Former Vice President Kamala Harris received the Chairman’s Award and used her platform to inspire hope. She acknowledged the challenges facing Black communities but reminded the audience that resilience has always been a part of their history.
“Some see the flames on our horizons, the rising waters in our cities, the shadows gathering over our democracy, and ask, ‘What do we do now?’ But we know exactly what to do, because we have done it before. And we will do it again. We use our power. We organize, we mobilize, we educate, and we advocate,” Harris said.
Her words reinforced the importance of collective action and perseverance in the face of adversity.
Dave Chappelle’s Tribute to the NAACP’s Legacy
Dave Chappelle, honored with the President’s Award, delivered a history lesson on the NAACP’s fight against negative portrayals of Black people in media. He highlighted the organization’s role in combating racism in Hollywood since the early 1900s.
“In 1915, the movie Birth of a Nation came out and had a hideous depiction of African-Americans,” Chappelle noted. “By 1927, the NAACP had opened its first office here in Hollywood. And from then, 100 years ago to this very night, they have been chipping away at this industry so that people like me can stand up in front of people and tell my story, or our stories.”
He also honored longtime collaborator and director Stan Lathan, recognizing his contributions to authentic Black storytelling.
Kerry Washington’s Call to Preserve Black History
Kerry Washington, who won the Outstanding Actress award for her role in Six Triple Eight, paid tribute to the real-life women behind the film. She reminded the audience of the 855 Black women who worked tirelessly during World War II to support U.S. soldiers.
“I want to most importantly thank the women of the 6888, the 855 women of the 6888, who proved to us how extraordinary Black women are, how extraordinary we have always been,” Washington said.
She also addressed current efforts to erase Black history from educational spaces. “At a time when our history is being ripped from us, when people are trying to get us to not tell our stories, we are telling your stories, ladies, because you are calling us forward into our greatness.”
Her speech served as a reminder that storytelling is a form of resistance and empowerment.
A Night to Remember
The 2025 NAACP Image Awards proved once again why they are one of the most significant celebrations of Black culture. From heartfelt speeches to groundbreaking wins, the event highlighted the power of representation and the resilience of the Black community.
