$1 Million Grant to Strengthen Detroit’s Black Communities

The Ally Charitable Foundation has pledged $1 million to support economic growth in Detroit. The grant will go to the Strategic Neighborhood Fund (SNF), an initiative focused on strengthening Black communities. This funding will improve housing, support small businesses, and enhance economic mobility in 10 neighborhoods.

Ally’s commitment is part of a broader effort to promote financial stability and community development. By working with the City of Detroit and Invest Detroit, the foundation aims to create lasting change.

Investing in Affordable Housing and Business Growth

A significant portion of the grant will go toward affordable housing. Many Detroit residents struggle with rising costs, making stable housing a challenge. Ally’s funding will support new developments and preservation efforts to keep housing accessible.

Additionally, the grant will provide Spark Grants for small businesses. These funds will help entrepreneurs grow and sustain their businesses, fostering job creation and economic stability in underserved areas.

A Commitment to Economic Mobility

Economic mobility remains a key focus of Ally’s mission. The foundation’s investment extends beyond housing and business grants, offering financial education and workforce development opportunities.

“Affordable housing is a pressing need both locally and nationally, and empowering small businesses through Spark Grants is essential for fostering vibrant communities,” said Kathie Patterson, incoming chair of the Ally Charitable Foundation. “We are committed to advancing the progress SNF has initiated and promoting inclusive economic mobility for our hometown, in collaboration with the City of Detroit and Invest Detroit.”

How the Strategic Neighborhood Fund Transforms Detroit

Invest Detroit, a nonprofit financial institution, manages the SNF program. For over 30 years, the organization has driven economic growth by connecting philanthropic resources with local initiatives. This grant will further strengthen those efforts by bringing essential funding to areas in need.

Residents play a central role in shaping these developments. The SNF conducts a yearlong planning process in each neighborhood, allowing community members to voice concerns and influence decisions. The goal is to ensure growth benefits long-term residents rather than displacing them.

Encouraging More Investments in Detroit

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan praised Ally’s contribution, emphasizing the importance of corporate partnerships in city revitalization.

“Creating more affordable housing across Detroit has been a major focus of my administration and City Council. Ally’s generous support for the Strategic Neighborhood Fund will help us accomplish that,” Duggan said. “The SNF strategy has been incredibly effective in driving new investment into our neighborhoods, and I encourage other civic-minded companies to join Ally in supporting this important work.”

The Path Forward for Detroit’s Black Communities

With this pledge, Ally Charitable Foundation is taking a crucial step toward economic justice in Detroit. The grant will provide long-term benefits, from stable housing to thriving businesses, helping Black communities build wealth and security.
