Kamala Harris, former Vice President and 2024 EBONY Power 100 cover star, will be honored with the Chairman’s Award at the 56th NAACP Image Awards. The prestigious ceremony will take place live from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium on February 22. This event marks Harris’ first major appearance since leaving the White House.

Kamala Harris: A Historic Legacy of Leadership

Kamala Harris made history as the first woman, Black American, and South Asian American Vice President of the United States during the Biden-Harris Administration. Throughout her tenure, she championed crucial issues such as reproductive rights, gun safety, and economic opportunities, leaving a significant mark on American policy and public service.

Her leadership also resulted in record job growth and pivotal legislative victories. Harris cast tie-breaking votes to pass key bills, including those lowering prescription drug costs, historic climate policies, and infrastructure investments. These accomplishments continue to resonate, demonstrating her commitment to shaping a more equitable society.

Harris’ Historic Presidential Bid and Unyielding Dedication

In 2024, Harris made history again by becoming the first Black and South Asian woman nominated for president by a major party. Garnering over 75 million votes in the shortest modern general election campaign, Harris solidified her place as a prominent figure in American politics. Her campaign was a testament to her tireless dedication to justice and equality.

Leon W. Russell, chair of the NAACP National Board of Directors, praised Harris’ commitment to change. “Vice President Kamala Harris is more than a leader; she is a force of change, driven by an unwavering passion to shape a brighter, more equitable future,” Russell stated. This recognition highlights Harris’ exceptional legacy and continued influence.

The NAACP Chairman’s Award: Celebrating Change and Courage

The Chairman’s Award is presented to individuals who excel in public service and use their platform to ignite meaningful change. Harris is being honored for her exceptional service to America and her unrelenting efforts to promote justice and equality.

Scott Mills, president and CEO of BET Media Group, expressed his admiration: “Vice President Harris is deeply deserving of the NAACP Chairman’s Award for both her historic accomplishments and her incredible legacy of service to America and our community.”

Harris as a Beacon of Hope and Progress

NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson described Harris as embodying the resilience and brilliance of Black women. “Vice President Harris fights for justice, amplifies the voices of the marginalized, and stands as a beacon of hope,” Johnson said. “When Black women lead, the entire nation rises.”

Her unwavering commitment to the betterment of society serves as a reminder that change, progress, and hope are achievable when Black women lead with courage and determination.

The 56th NAACP Image Awards will air live on February 22 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. With a special 2.5-hour broadcast, the event promises to celebrate the accomplishments of extraordinary individuals like Kamala Harris.
