A Nationwide Celebration of Black Heritage Through Dance

The legendary Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has launched an electrifying 18-city tour in honor of Black History Month. This tour pays tribute to Black culture, ancestry, and the life of the late artistic director Emerita Judith Jamison, who passed away in November 2024.

Performances are set for prestigious venues, including Washington, D.C.’s John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Atlanta’s Fox Theatre. The tour is designed to captivate audiences with both classic and new performances that reflect the richness of Black heritage.

Iconic and New Performances Take Center Stage

This year’s tour features an impressive lineup of dance masterpieces. Audiences can expect the return of Ronald K. Brown’s Grace, celebrating its 25th anniversary, and Elisa Monte’s Treading, a mesmerizing duet known for its sculptural beauty.

Adding to the excitement, the tour includes world premieres such as Jamar Roberts’s Al-Andalus Blues, Hope Boykin’s Finding Free, and Lar Lubovitch’s Many Angels, marking his first creation for the company. Additionally, interim artistic director Matthew Rushing presents Sacred Songs, a deeply moving piece reflecting spiritual and cultural themes.

Revelations: A Timeless Masterpiece

No Alvin Ailey tour would be complete without Revelations, the company’s most celebrated performance.

“Audiences in every city will be inspired by the power of Alvin Ailey’s must-see American masterpiece Revelations,” the theater said in a statement. “World-renowned for sending hearts soaring and lifting audiences to their feet with its perfect blend of reverent grace and spiritual elation.”

This legendary work reflects Ailey’s childhood experiences in the South and pays homage to the deep spiritual traditions of the African American community. Through soulful movements and uplifting music, Revelations continues to resonate with audiences across generations.

Ailey II and the Next Generation of Dance

Ailey II, the company’s second ensemble dedicated to emerging dancers and choreographers, is also hitting the road. As part of a 28-city tour from February 2 to May 1, Ailey II will perform in Albuquerque, Kansas City, and Miami before returning to New York City for its annual season at the Ailey Citigroup Theater from March 26 to April 6, 2025.

This tour allows young talent to shine while preserving Ailey’s commitment to innovation and artistic excellence.

Portrait of Ailey: A Deep Dive into a Dance Icon

In addition to the live performances, an exclusive eight-part documentary series, Portrait of Ailey, will be released. This series will provide an intimate look at Alvin Ailey’s journey—from performer and choreographer to social activist and arts advocate.

Featuring rare archival footage and expert insights, the documentary will be available for free on PBS LearningMedia next month. This initiative ensures that Ailey’s influence continues to inspire new generations.

Keeping the Legacy Alive

The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s Black History Month tour is more than just a series of performances—it’s a movement that honors the past while shaping the future. With breathtaking choreography, rich storytelling, and a dedication to cultural preservation, this tour promises to be an unforgettable experience for audiences across the country.
