Elon Musk’s Access to Federal Funds Raises Questions

Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) have gained access to the U.S. federal payment system, sparking concerns about oversight and accountability. This move, approved by the Treasury Department in February 2025, has led to debates among lawmakers, including Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX), who is raising important questions about transparency.

The federal payment system controls approximately $6 trillion, and even elected officials do not have direct access to it. Many lawmakers, both Democratic and Republican, are questioning why a private citizen like Musk has been granted such significant financial authority.

Rep. Jasmine Crockett Calls for Accountability

Rep. Crockett has been vocal about her concerns regarding Musk’s influence in Washington. During a recent interview on MSNBC, she questioned why the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an entity Musk oversees, requires access to these funds.

“So when you start talking about who should have access to literally the system that controls approximately $6 trillion of our dollars, I don’t really understand,” Crockett stated. She emphasized that federal employees traditionally follow strict legal guidelines when distributing government funds, making this new development particularly troubling.

Treasury Secretary Leaves Amid Controversy

Musk’s access to the federal payment system reportedly caused internal disputes within the Treasury Department. Acting Treasury Secretary David Lebryk was placed on leave after resisting the decision, further fueling concerns about potential political pressure and financial mismanagement.

Several lawmakers believe this move could set a dangerous precedent, allowing unelected individuals to wield substantial power over public funds. Some GOP members have expressed private concerns about Musk’s growing influence but have not publicly opposed the decision.

Bipartisan Concerns Over Government Oversight

Rep. Crockett has been a consistent critic of Musk’s role in government affairs, questioning the purpose of DOGE and its authority. She is now part of a newly established subcommittee, led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, which aims to examine DOGE’s role in federal operations.

“There were Republicans that silently, or in the background, were cheering us on,” Crockett revealed. “And saying ‘this is wrong.’ Like they knew we had negotiated, and all of a sudden, this guy who’s not elected makes a tweet on Twitter.”

Sen. Ron Wyden, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, also expressed his concerns. In a letter to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Wyden warned about the risks of political interference in financial systems.

Calls for Greater Transparency and Checks on Power

Rep. Crockett and other lawmakers are pushing for more oversight to ensure that government funds are managed responsibly. She has pointed out that when she took office, she was banned from practicing law to prevent conflicts of interest. She argues that Musk, as a government contractor, should not be in a position to control federal payments while benefiting from government deals.

“There is no reason for any political appointee, if you can even call him that, to have this kind of access. There’s none,” she said.

With concerns growing about Musk’s role in federal financial operations, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are calling for answers. Whether this move leads to long-term changes in government oversight remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Rep. Jasmine Crockett is determined to hold those in power accountable.
