Dr. Dedunmola Oluwo is an inspiring example of resilience, entrepreneurship, and ambition. Despite the challenges of medical school, this Nigerian trailblazer graduated with honors from the University of Debrecen in Hungary while running four businesses. Her story highlights the essence of Black Girl Magic—empowerment, determination, and success against all odds.

    Dr. Oluwo’s Entrepreneurial Spirit

Dr. Oluwo’s journey into entrepreneurship began by accident but quickly turned into a passion that fueled her success. She founded her first business, Hair by Dedun, during her time in medical school. What started as a simple hair-braiding service for a friend soon became a full-fledged business, helping her generate extra income for her studies. Her second venture, Dedun’s Cakes, was born out of her curiosity about baking, which evolved into a deep passion.

“I started baking after a neighbor asked me to bake a cake for a fellowship,” Dr. Oluwo shared in an interview. “It took four years of trial and error, but I finally perfected my skills and officially launched Dedun’s Cakes in 2012.” She didn’t stop there—her third business, Dedun Cooks, came into existence when she realized Nigerian students abroad needed home-cooked meals to ease their study routines. Finally, she launched Belle Artistry by Dedun, a beauty business focused on makeup and beauty services.

    The Drive Behind the Hustle

Behind Dr. Oluwo’s incredible work ethic is a strong role model: her mother, a retired civil engineer and single parent. Growing up, Dr. Oluwo witnessed her mother’s tireless work as she juggled supervising road constructions and managing a farm and textile store. Though Dr. Oluwo initially promised herself she wouldn’t work as hard as her mother, she admits that her mother’s example shaped her into the hardworking individual she is today.

“My mom did it all—always on the road and working late into the night. Watching her, I thought, ‘I’m not going to work that hard,’ but look at me now,” Dr. Oluwo reflects. Her experiences growing up, including her time spent in a boarding house, helped her develop a sense of independence and discipline that would later support her success in both medicine and business.

    Overcoming Setbacks and Embracing Opportunity

Throughout her journey, Dr. Oluwo faced numerous setbacks. One of the biggest challenges was learning to bake. Despite many early failures, her determination paid off. “I spent hours watching YouTube videos, testing recipes, and sharing my cakes with friends for feedback. When I finally got my first order, I knew this was something I could pursue long-term,” she recalls.

Her tenacity in the kitchen mirrors her approach to medicine. While completing her medical degree, she remained committed to her vision of becoming a health entrepreneur. When she realized the need for medical services in rural Nigeria, she developed an innovative plan to combine her medical knowledge with entrepreneurship through telemedicine. Dr. Oluwo enrolled in an MSc program in eHealth Management and Telemedicine to strengthen her skills and bring her vision to life.

    A Vision for Rural Health

Dr. Oluwo is not only focused on her businesses but also passionate about improving healthcare in Nigeria. She hopes to use telemedicine to provide essential medical services to rural areas, where access to healthcare remains a significant challenge. By integrating technology with healthcare, Dr. Oluwo aims to make medical care more accessible and affordable for underserved communities.

She encourages others to take the first step toward their dreams, no matter how big or small. “Your success depends on you,” she advises. “Take the first step and always remember to take God along. We were all made for greatness, but until we tap into that, we can never fully realize our potential.”
