Dr. Linda J.M. Holloway is making a profound impact in the fight against hair bullying and literacy inequality. Over the past three years, she has dedicated herself to changing lives by launching a powerful initiative: a 1,000-book giveaway campaign aimed at children in marginalized communities. Her mission is to both combat the pain caused by hair bullying and improve literacy rates for children who lack access to books.
Addressing the Problem of Hair Bullying
Dr. Holloway’s commitment to fighting hair bullying stems from her deep concern for the wellbeing of young Black children. After learning that one in three children struggle to read at grade level, she was moved to act. But it wasn’t just the educational gap that caught her attention—it was the disturbing rise in hair bullying among Black children. Many were subjected to cruel teasing about their natural hair, leading some to avoid school altogether. Some even faced suspension or expulsion for the way they wore their hair. This reality was deeply upsetting to Dr. Holloway, sparking her desire to make a change.
“I couldn’t ignore the pain these children were experiencing,” Dr. Holloway shares. “The way they were bullied because of their hair, combined with the challenge of low literacy rates, was something that needed attention.”
Launching the 1,000-Book Giveaway Campaign
Inspired by the urgency of the situation, Dr. Holloway launched the 1,000-free book giveaway campaign. Her goal was simple: to provide children in underrepresented communities with access to books that would not only foster a love for reading but also combat hair bullying. Dr. Holloway chose to distribute her book, I Love My Happy Hair, as the first in her giveaway. The book tells the story of Little Miss Linda, a young girl who struggles to love her natural hair until her mother teaches her to embrace and appreciate it.
Through the book, Dr. Holloway offers a positive message to children who might otherwise feel ashamed of their hair. She also includes a fun and educational element—a Happy Hair Song and an Anti-Hair Bully pledge—that children can sign to show their commitment to celebrating diversity and standing up against bullying.
Reaching Beyond Local Communities
Dr. Holloway’s efforts have had a remarkable reach. Although the campaign began locally, its impact has stretched beyond the borders of the United States. Her books have found their way to South Africa, where they are being used to help build libraries for children in rural areas who previously had to walk miles just to access books. This expansion highlights the power of her work in not only empowering children but also bridging gaps in education.
“I’m incredibly proud of the progress we’ve made,” says Dr. Holloway. “It’s been rewarding to know that my books are making a difference, whether it’s locally or across the world.”
Continuing the Fight for Literacy and Empowerment
With over 2,500 books distributed to date, Dr. Holloway is more determined than ever to continue her mission. Her vision is to use her books to educate, uplift, and empower children across the globe. She is also planning to expand her initiative, with the goal of eventually having all eight of her award-winning children’s books in the hands of young readers everywhere.
As Dr. Holloway looks to the future, she remains dedicated to her cause. “Every child deserves to love who they are,” she says, “and having access to books that reflect their experiences is a key part of that journey.”
Dr. Holloway’s Books: More Than Just Stories
Dr. Holloway’s campaign is about more than just giving away books. It’s about creating an environment where children feel valued, supported, and empowered. Her books, which can be purchased on Amazon, provide essential messages of self-love, inclusivity, and resilience—values that children can carry with them throughout their lives.
Her campaign, however, is far from over. Dr. Holloway’s passion for change continues to inspire, and her efforts are making a lasting difference in the fight against hair bullying and for improved literacy.
