Joke Muyiwa, a renowned Nollywood actress, has achieved a remarkable academic milestone at the age of 61. She recently earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Theatre Arts from the prestigious University of Ibadan. This accomplishment highlights her dedication to both her craft and her education, marking a significant achievement in her lifelong pursuit of knowledge.
An Academic Triumph at 61
Muyiwa’s journey to obtaining her PhD is a testament to her perseverance and commitment to lifelong learning. The actress shared her joy on Instagram, where fans flooded her with congratulatory messages. This achievement comes after years of hard work, during which she balanced her career and education. In 2019, she shared with Tribune Online that she had already completed her M.Phil at the University of Ibadan and was in the process of finishing her PhD at Redeemers University.
“Being busy helps me avoid distractions,” she remarked, explaining how balancing her acting career and academic pursuits kept her focused. Her determination to finish her PhD while maintaining her presence in Nollywood has inspired many fans and colleagues in the industry.
Promotions and Recognition in the Arts
In addition to her academic success, Muyiwa has also been promoted to the prestigious role of Chief Arts Fellow, a professorial position in her field. This recognition further cements her status as one of the leading figures in the Nigerian performing arts community. Muyiwa expressed her gratitude for this honor, sharing on social media, “My promotion to the position of Chief Arts Fellow was announced today, Lord I say THANK YOU.”
Muyiwa’s career as an educator is equally impressive. She has been teaching since 2003 and was appointed the head of the Department of Performing Arts at Olabisi Onabanjo University in 2010. Her academic expertise and passion for the arts have made her a respected figure in the Nigerian educational and entertainment sectors.
A Lifelong Journey in Nollywood and Theatre
Muyiwa’s acting career dates back to the early 1980s, when she first joined the University of Ibadan movie company. Since then, she has appeared in numerous Nollywood films, including King of Thieves, Swallow, and Love Castle. However, her love for acting began on stage, where she believes actors can truly hone their craft.
“Stage is a training ground for any actor,” she once said. “If you’ve never performed on stage, you haven’t fully experienced acting. The stage is where you learn the versatility needed for screen acting as well.”
Her early experiences with the University of Ibadan Performing Company and NTA laid the foundation for a successful career that would span decades. Her ability to blend stage performances with film roles has helped her become one of Nollywood’s most beloved and respected actresses.
