Lesego Chombo, a 26-year-old attorney and reigning Miss World Africa 2024, has added another milestone to her achievements. Botswana’s newly elected president, Duma Boko, appointed her as the country’s Minister of Youth and Gender Affairs. This historic appointment has drawn both national and international attention.

President Boko justified his decision by emphasizing the need for actionable change in youth and gender issues. “Youth and gender must go beyond conversation to action,” he said, highlighting Chombo’s unique blend of leadership, experience, and advocacy.

A New Role with Big Responsibilities

In addition to her ministerial role, Chombo has been nominated to the Botswana Parliament. Her journey from pageantry to public service has inspired many. On Instagram, she shared her excitement:

“As of today, I am blessed with a role that gives me a greater opportunity to serve young people and be part of the movement striving towards a new and better Botswana. All I have ever really longed for was to make people’s lives better. Now here is active and meaningful change!”

Her vision for the ministry includes empowering young people and advancing gender equality. These goals reflect her longstanding commitment to uplifting her community.

From Law Courts to Leadership

Born and raised in Botswana, Chombo pursued her passion for justice at the University of Botswana, earning a law degree. She began her legal career with internships at Baliki Corporate Law and later joined Kebabonye Business Law, where she rose to become an associate.

Her experience in law prepared her to handle the complexities of governance. She consistently advocated for fairness and justice, values she now brings to her political career.

A Legacy of Empowerment and Advocacy

Chombo’s journey into public service stems from her early work in social change. She made her debut in pageantry in 2012 by winning the Queen Esther title, a competition aimed at empowering young women.

Over the years, she expanded her influence, earning titles like Miss Women Empowerment in 2017 and Miss Botswana in 2022. Through these platforms, she founded the Lesego Chombo Foundation, which focuses on supporting underprivileged youth. Its flagship initiative, The Genesis Project, helps parents develop the skills needed to nurture their children’s growth.

Her title as Miss World Africa 2024 amplified her efforts, giving her a global stage to promote social causes.

Balancing Passion and Purpose

Outside her professional life, Chombo enjoys playing the guitar, swimming, and participating in sports like baseball. She also runs “Law Talks,” a website offering legal advice to help people navigate complex legal issues.

Her contributions have earned her accolades, including “Woman of the Year” and “Favorite Personality of the Year” at Botswana’s 2024 Women’s Awards.

Chombo remains committed to creating meaningful change. Looking ahead, she plans to open a law firm focused on empowering others through accessible legal services.

A Bright Future for Botswana

Lesego Chombo’s appointment marks a significant step forward for Botswana’s leadership. As Minister of Youth and Gender Affairs, her diverse background in law, advocacy, and pageantry positions her to inspire transformative change.

Her journey reflects the power of determination and the importance of giving back to the community. Botswana is set to benefit from her vision and dedication.
