Tennesha Wood is changing the matchmaking game. Through her company, The Broom List, she focuses on connecting educated and successful Black singles. Wood’s mission is to celebrate Black love and create meaningful connections. In her recent appearance on the Mompreneurs podcast, she shared her inspiring journey, the importance of love, and how motherhood has influenced her work.
Celebrating Black Love Through Matchmaking
Wood has a unique approach to matchmaking. She emphasizes the importance of finding the right partner. “I don’t think there’s anything more important than the person you end up with,” she shared during her podcast interview. Her dedication shines through as she celebrates each client’s journey, from first dates to marriage.
Her vision is clear: “What is ultimately going to make or break your happiness is who you spend every day with.” By creating a supportive environment, Wood encourages clients to find lasting love. Each success story fuels her passion for matchmaking and highlights the importance of connection in the Black community.
The Journey to Starting The Broom List
Wood’s journey began in San Francisco, where she worked in corporate sales. Feeling unfulfilled in her job, she turned to dating apps like Match and OkCupid. While meeting new people, she realized they weren’t the right matches for her. However, this experience sparked her passion for helping others find love.
“I started hooking up my friends with people I had personally vetted,” she explained. This hands-on approach laid the foundation for her future in matchmaking. After appearing on the reality show #BlackLove, she realized that matchmaking could be her true calling. She saw the potential to create a career that celebrates love and relationships.
Launching The Broom List
In November 2020, Wood launched The Broom List. The name reflects a cultural tradition in Black weddings, where couples “jump the broom” to symbolize their union. Her company focuses on educated, marriage-minded Black singles, creating a niche that she believes has room to grow.
To join The Broom List, clients must be 28 or older, college-educated, and ready for a committed relationship. “Sometimes I do get pushback on that,” she admitted, referencing the income and education requirements. Despite this, Wood is committed to helping her clients find love that lasts.
A Thorough Vetting Process
The matchmaking process at The Broom List is comprehensive. Each client undergoes an in-depth vetting process. Wood discusses their relationship histories and even tours their home environments. She believes that understanding a client deeply is essential for successful matchmaking.
“By the end of it, I feel very close to my clients,” Wood noted. This personalized approach allows her to connect clients based on shared values and lifestyles. Her focus on compatibility enhances the chances of finding lasting love for her clients.
The Impact of Motherhood on Her Work
Motherhood has profoundly changed Wood’s perspective. As a new mom, she feels more empathetic toward others. “Who I am as a person and how I see people, I’m just far more empathetic,” she explained. This shift in mindset has influenced how she approaches her matchmaking business.
Additionally, Wood learned to celebrate progress over perfection. “I realized that I’m going to burn out if I hold on to this idea of perfection in everything I do,” she shared. This lesson has helped her balance her roles as a mom and entrepreneur, allowing her to thrive in both areas.
Encouraging More Black Matchmakers
Looking to the future, Wood sees great potential for growth in her field. She hopes to inspire more Black matchmakers to enter the industry, emphasizing the need for representation. “I would love for there to be more Black matchmakers focusing on Black professionals,” she expressed.
Her vision includes expanding the space of matchmaking for Black singles, creating more opportunities for love in the community. Wood’s passion and dedication make her a trailblazer in the matchmaking world.
