On October 13, 2024, Vice President Kamala Harris unveiled a bold new initiative aimed at empowering Black men. During a rally in Greenville, North Carolina, she introduced her “Opportunity Agenda for Black Men,” designed to engage this crucial voting demographic ahead of the upcoming election. With recent polls showing a tight race against Republican candidate Donald Trump, Harris’s campaign is making significant strides to win back support among Black male voters.

Forgivable Loans to Boost Black Entrepreneurship

Central to Harris’s plan is a commitment to provide up to 1 million forgivable loans, each worth $20,000, for Black entrepreneurs. This initiative is set to give Black men the financial tools they need to start and grow their own businesses. Harris emphasized that these loans will not only help individuals but also strengthen communities by creating jobs and economic opportunities.

In addition to financial assistance, the plan includes investments in training, mentorship, and apprenticeships for Black men in high-demand industries. These efforts aim to equip them with the skills necessary to thrive in today’s economy. “This agenda is a further realization of Vice President Harris’ Opportunity Economy,” said Cedric Richmond, a Congressman and campaign co-chair. He highlighted the goal of enabling Black men to build wealth and secure a better future for their families.

A Response to Shifting Support

Harris’s initiative comes in response to changing voter sentiments. Historically, Black men have leaned Democratic, but recent polls show a decline in support for Harris. A New York Times/Siena College poll revealed that while 90% voted for President Biden in 2020, that number has fallen to 78%. In battleground states, 82% still support Harris, but 15% are considering Trump.

Former President Barack Obama voiced his frustration at this trend during a recent event in Pittsburgh. He cautioned against complacency, urging Black men not to sit out the election or support Trump. “You have someone who has consistently shown disregard, not just for the communities, but for you as a person,” Obama stated. His comments sparked a backlash from some Black Republicans, who argued that their reasons for shifting support are more complex.

High-Profile Support and Community Engagement

To bolster her campaign, Harris is partnering with high-profile celebrities and community leaders. Magic Johnson, Jermaine Dupri, and John Legend are just a few of the influential figures supporting her efforts. These celebrities will participate in events like “Black Men Huddle Up,” designed to engage Black men in discussions about politics while watching football games.

Additionally, Harris has been actively meeting with Black leaders and faith communities to strengthen her outreach. She has appeared in interviews with prominent media figures, including Roland Martin and Charlamagne tha God, to discuss her plans directly with voters. These initiatives aim to show Black men that their voices matter and that Harris is committed to earning their support.

A Focus on Legalization and Job Creation

As part of her economic agenda, Harris is advocating for the legalization of recreational marijuana. She believes that this move will provide new opportunities for Black men to access wealth and jobs in this emerging market. The goal is not just to create jobs but to ensure that Black men can participate fully in this industry, which has historically sidelined them.

By combining financial support, mentorship, and advocacy for legal reforms, Harris aims to create a comprehensive strategy that addresses the unique challenges faced by Black men. “Black men, we gotta get them out to vote. That’s number one,” Magic Johnson stressed during a recent rally. The message is clear: mobilizing this voter base is crucial for the upcoming election.
