The Democratic National Committee (DNC) and the Harris-Walz campaign have launched a major voter registration drive targeting young Black voters. To coincide with National Voter Registration Day on September 17 and National Black Voter Registration Day on September 20, the campaign is focusing on key battleground states and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). With the 2024 election just 49 days away, this push aims to energize and mobilize young voters in crucial swing states.
HBCUs Play a Central Role in the Campaign
The campaign will hold in-person and virtual voter registration events across 60 HBCU campuses in states like Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. These institutions have long been hubs of Black civic engagement. In North Carolina, which boasts the second-highest number of HBCUs in the country, nine in-person events are scheduled this week. The focus on HBCUs highlights their significant influence in mobilizing young Black voters.
Kamala Harris herself will mark National Voter Registration Day with a special event in Philadelphia. This event, hosted by the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), will feature a conversation with students from Lincoln University and Cheyney University, two historic HBCUs. By engaging directly with students, the campaign aims to address pressing community issues and encourage voter participation.
Engaging Through Media Partnerships
To expand its reach, the Harris-Walz campaign is partnering with key media platforms. One of the major collaborations is with Revolt, a hip-hop culture and news site. This partnership aims to engage younger Black voters by using platforms that resonate with them. The campaign’s digital strategy extends beyond traditional methods, leveraging media that directly connects with the target audience.
Additionally, the campaign is launching a national voter assistance textline in both English and Spanish. This service simplifies the voter registration process, offering real-time information and support. The DNC’s IWillVote.com platform will also provide clear and reliable guidance on how to register and cast ballots.
Harris’s Appearance with NABJ Addresses Concerns
Kamala Harris’s upcoming appearance with NABJ comes after the organization faced criticism for inviting former President Donald Trump to its annual convention. The backlash was intense, particularly among those concerned about Trump’s record on issues affecting Black Americans. NABJ President Ken Lemon stated, “This event will not be a campaign rally but will be handled with respect to journalistic principles.” By holding this event, NABJ aims to refocus on voter engagement, especially among young Black voters.
NABJ will also provide a live feed of PolitiFact fact-checking on its website and social media channels through #NABJFactCheck. This ensures that viewers receive accurate information in real time, adding a layer of credibility to the discussion.
Focus on Battleground States
The campaign is putting a strong emphasis on swing states like Georgia and Pennsylvania, where Black voters were crucial in the 2020 election. During that election, Black voters played a key role in flipping these states. The Harris-Walz campaign aims to maintain that momentum by prioritizing outreach to these communities. In addition to in-person efforts, the campaign is using digital initiatives to spread its message.
DNC Chair Jaime Harrison emphasized the importance of voter participation, saying, “Every voter deserves to make their voice heard and cast their ballot for the future they want to see.” This push includes a significant investment in the “I Will Vote” program and new text hotlines for direct voter support leading up to Election Day.
