Small-Town Dreamer Takes the NYFW Stage

Lurissa Ingrid’s journey from a small-town dreamer to a celebrated hairstylist at New York Fashion Week (NYFW) is nothing short of remarkable. Originally from Upstate New York, Ingrid has risen to prominence with her exceptional skills and relentless drive. Recently, she showcased her talent styling for renowned designers LaQuan Smith and Maui X Lolita at NYFW, marking a significant milestone in her career.

Ingrid’s work at NYFW highlights her unique ability to blend creativity with technical expertise. Her journey is a testament to perseverance and artistic vision, reflecting the dedication and passion she has poured into her craft.

From High School Stylist to Celebrity Hair Artist

“I’m a single mom from Upstate NY who had a dream to be a celebrity hairstylist,” Ingrid says, recalling her early days. She began styling her friends and family in high school, which led her father to build a salon for her in their basement. This early start was crucial, as it paved the way for a lifelong career.

Her journey continued with a local hair school graduation and a decade of salon ownership. Ingrid’s backstage experience at Brooklyn and New York Fashion Weeks further solidified her passion and expertise, eventually leading to her role in high-profile fashion shows.

Mastering the Creative Process for Fashion Week

At NYFW, Ingrid’s role as a lead hairstylist involves crafting a cohesive look that complements the overall vision of the show. “I need to see the total look—what the makeup will be and the necklines of the clothes—so the hair can complement the look rather than compete with it,” she explains. This approach ensures that the hairstyles enhance the entire presentation.

Ingrid’s meticulous planning and collaboration with crafting a cohesive look are essential in creating runway magic. Her attention to detail and ability to adapt make her a standout in the industry.

A Proud Moment: Mother-Daughter Duo Backstage

Ingrid’s career has had many highlights, but this season is especially special as her first-born child will assist her backstage. “I’m proud of my journey and all that came with it. I’m proud that during the times where I wanted to give up, I persevered,” she reflects. This mother-daughter duo working together is a poignant moment in her career.

Managing the high pressure of Fashion Week involves careful planning and a reliable team. Ingrid emphasizes the importance of clear communication and a trusted assistant to navigate the busy environment. “Countless meetings, Zoom calls, text threads, and Google Meets ensure clear and precise communication so nothing is missed,” she advises.

Leading the Charge and Inspiring the Future

Working with designers like LaQuan Smith and Maui X Lolita is a career highlight for Ingrid. “Both designers have worked hard to build a brand that’s so inspiring. The opportunity to partner with them is amazing,” she shares. Her collaborative approach is simple yet effective, focusing on bringing the designers’ visions to life.

As a Black woman making waves in the hairstyling industry, Ingrid finds deep meaning in her work. “Black women in the industry have come such a long way, along with how hair has evolved over the years. Each era sings a song, and the hairstyles are the lyrics,” she reflects.

For aspiring Black hairstylists, Ingrid offers heartfelt advice. “Stay focused, determined, and vigilant in your education. Never let a bad experience plant doubt that you don’t belong here. What’s for you is for you. Keep God first, and all things will be added,” she encourages.
