At just 29, Michelle Adepoju has already made a powerful mark in the fashion world. On September 6, 2024, she wowed audiences at New York Fashion Week (NYFW) with her very first runway show. As the founder and creative director of KÍLÈNTÁR, Michelle’s debut was a celebration of Black beauty and African craftsmanship.

A Stunning NYFW Debut

Michelle’s debut at NYFW was nothing short of spectacular. Her collection, showcased as part of The Green Show and presented by Mastercard, captivated the crowd. “It felt both beautiful and overwhelming,” Michelle shared after the show. “I was a little nervous, but I knew my work deserved to be on that stage.” Her collection, named “Mama Ìbẹ́ta,” celebrated African artistry and the women artisans behind each piece.

Showcasing African Craftsmanship and Ethical Fashion

The “Mama Ìbẹ́ta” collection paid homage to traditional African craftsmanship. Each garment was handwoven, dyed, and beaded by skilled women artisans from West Africa. Michelle’s designs radiated Black beauty and femininity, featuring bright colors, flowing fabrics, and elegant silhouettes. “I’ve been deeply inspired by the incredible women artisans I’ve met across West Africa,” she explained. “Their dedication to preserving traditional techniques has empowered me.”

Fashion with a Purpose

Michelle’s show was not just about fashion; it was about making a statement. The collection highlighted themes of culture, heritage, and sustainability. The finale featured intricately beaded column dresses with sheer underlays, which were the ultimate showstoppers. Michelle’s designs are perfect for various occasions, from vacations to moments of self-care.

Future Ambitions and Iconic Clients

Looking ahead, Michelle has big plans for her fashion career. She aims to dress iconic figures like Solange Knowles, Michelle Obama, and Lupita Nyong’o. “These women represent strength, authenticity, and cultural pride,” Michelle said. With her ambitious vision and remarkable talent, Michelle Adepoju is definitely a designer to watch in the fashion industry.
