The South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team was welcomed to the White House by President Joe Biden in a celebration of their undefeated 38-0 season. This was their first visit to the White House, despite winning three championships since 2017. The President acknowledged their outstanding achievements and the team’s incredible commitment to excellence.
The Perfect Season: A Historic 38-0 Record
The Gamecocks’ 2023-24 season was nothing short of remarkable. With a perfect record of 38-0, they became just the 10th team in women’s college basketball history to go undefeated. President Biden expressed his admiration during the ceremony, saying, “Incredible. I picked you to win,” showing his personal connection to the team’s success. The team dominated on the court, overcoming the challenges of losing key starters from the previous season to the WNBA draft and graduation.
Throughout the season, the Gamecocks displayed relentless teamwork, a quality that led to their national championship win. In the final game against Iowa, they stepped up in every aspect of the game, with four players scoring in double figures and their bench outscoring Iowa’s 37 to 0. Their dominance on the court culminated in one of the most-watched basketball games in five years, drawing over 24 million viewers.
Dawn Staley’s Leadership and Impact on Women’s Basketball
Coach Dawn Staley, a true visionary for women’s basketball, has led the Gamecocks to their third national championship and second in just three years. When she took over the South Carolina program, the team had only been to two tournaments in 17 years. Now, they are a powerhouse with a 109-3 record over the past three seasons.
Staley’s influence extends beyond the court. She has been a trailblazer for Black women in sports, inspired by Carolyn Peck, the first Black female coach to win an NCAA Division I women’s basketball national championship. After her own first title win, Staley sent a piece of the net to every Black woman head coach in Division I basketball, fulfilling Peck’s legacy of paying it forward. “That network is your legacy,” Biden said, recognizing Staley’s impact on the future of women’s sports.
A Moment of Unity and Empowerment at the White House
During the ceremony, Coach Staley reflected on the significance of the Gamecocks’ journey, not only in terms of their athletic success but also their role in promoting diversity and unity. She spoke about South Carolina’s history and how far the state has come, referencing the removal of the Confederate flag from the Statehouse grounds as a symbol of progress.
“Today, my staff, my team, and I stand here embodying diversity, inclusiveness, and unity,” Staley said. Her words underscored the importance of teamwork, dedication, and the power of coming together for a common goal. Staley’s message resonated deeply with her team, fans, and supporters who cheered them on throughout the season.
Honoring Excellence: The Gamecocks’ Impact on Women’s Sports
The South Carolina Gamecocks’ success goes beyond the court. Their undefeated season and national championship win have set an inspiring example for young athletes, especially girls, who aspire to succeed in sports. The team’s resilience, hard work, and ability to rise to every challenge highlight the transformative power of women’s sports.
With players like A’ja Wilson, a South Carolina alumna who now stars in the WNBA, leading the way, the Gamecocks are contributing to the growing popularity of women’s sports worldwide. President Biden summed it up best when he said, “Everyone watches women’s sports now.”
