Cuban-American singer Celia Cruz has made history as the first Afro-Latina to be featured on U.S. currency. The United States Mint has unveiled a quarter honoring Cruz, showcasing her legendary status and remarkable impact.

This historic coin was introduced last Thursday on the Mint’s official website, marking a significant milestone in the American Women Quarters Program.

A Tribute to the Queen of Salsa

The American Women Quarters program, launched in 2022, is dedicated to celebrating the contributions of women throughout U.S. history. Celia Cruz’s inclusion as the 14th woman to receive this honor underscores her profound influence in music and culture. The quarter features an image of Cruz with her signature phrase, “¡Azúcar!”—a nod to her vibrant personality and iconic status.

This program has previously honored notable women such as writer and activist Maya Angelou, former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, and journalist Jovita Idar. Cruz’s addition to this esteemed list highlights her significant role in shaping American cultural heritage.

Coin Design and Symbolism

The design of Cruz’s quarter captures her radiant smile and her famous exclamation. On the reverse side of the coin is the traditional image of George Washington, designed by Laura Gardin Fraser in 1932. This juxtaposition symbolizes the blending of Cruz’s cultural heritage with the broader American narrative.

The U.S. Mint’s choice to feature Cruz reflects a growing recognition of diverse contributions to American history. The program will continue until 2025, celebrating other trailblazing women who have made substantial impacts in their respective fields.

International Celebration and Legacy

The U.S. Embassy in Cuba has celebrated this milestone with great enthusiasm. A statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) expressed excitement about honoring the “Queen of Salsa” and her enduring legacy. This global recognition underscores Cruz’s influence not only in the United States but also in her home country of Cuba.

Celia Cruz, who passed away in 2003, remains a beloved figure whose music transcends borders. Her inclusion on the U.S. quarter is a testament to her enduring legacy and the widespread appreciation for her contributions to the world of music and beyond.

Looking Ahead: The Future of the American Women Quarters Program

The American Women Quarters Program aims to continue highlighting the achievements of extraordinary women.

As the program progresses, it will feature more remarkable women whose stories and contributions have shaped American history. Celia Cruz’s quarter is a powerful reminder of the impact that diverse voices have on our shared cultural heritage.
