Bloomberg Philanthropies is making waves with an unprecedented $600 million donation to four historically Black medical schools.

This landmark investment, revealed on August 7, 2024, will provide significant boosts to the endowments of Charles R. Drew University of Medicine & Science, Howard University College of Medicine, Meharry Medical College, and Morehouse School of Medicine. Additionally, it includes seed funding for the Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine, a new institution in New Orleans.

Major Funding Allocation to Black Medical Schools

The financial support will dramatically increase the endowments of three of these schools. Howard University College of Medicine, Meharry Medical College, and Morehouse School of Medicine will each receive $175 million.

Charles R. Drew University of Medicine & Science will get $75 million. This funding surge will more than double the endowments of the three larger schools, greatly enhancing their ability to manage tuition costs, support research, and meet operational needs.

The Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine, a new collaboration between Xavier University of Louisiana and Ochsner Health, will receive $5 million to kickstart its operations. This new addition aims to further diversify the medical field and provide more opportunities for Black students in the healthcare sector.

Enhancing Diversity and Addressing Health Disparities

Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Greenwood Initiative spearheads this transformative investment. The Initiative focuses on tackling systemic underinvestment in Black institutions and communities. By strengthening these medical schools, the initiative seeks to address health disparities and improve racial equity in healthcare.

Michael R. Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg Philanthropies, emphasized the importance of this donation. “We have much more to do to build a country where every person, regardless of race, has equal access to quality health care,” he said.

This investment aims to empower new generations of Black doctors and promote a more equitable future for healthcare in the U.S.

Impact on Future Generations of Black Doctors

According to the American Medical Association, Black patients often receive better care from Black physicians. Research shows that Black patients are 34% more likely to get preventative care from Black doctors.

Despite making up 13% of the U.S. population, Black individuals account for only 7% of medical school graduates and less than 6% of physicians. This gap contributes to significant economic and health inequities.

Historically, these four Black medical schools have played a crucial role in training Black doctors. They graduate about half of all Black doctors in the U.S. However, systemic underfunding and discriminatory practices have long hampered their growth. This investment will help bridge these gaps and support the schools’ mission to diversify the medical field.

Building Institutional Wealth and Supporting Communities

Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Greenwood Initiative also includes other strategic investments aimed at improving racial wealth equity. These efforts involve the Black Wealth Data Center, the Racial Wealth Equity Database, and the Cities for Financial Empowerment Funds’ CityStart Initiative.

By boosting the institutional wealth of historically Black medical schools, the Initiative will enhance their ability to train the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Dr. David M. Carlisle, President and CEO of Charles R. Drew University of Medicine & Science, praised the donation. “This historic gift is a transformative investment in the future of healthcare,” he said. The funding will help these institutions train healthcare professionals committed to serving underserved communities and leading health equity initiatives.

A Vision for a More Equitable Future

Howard University President Ben Vinson III, Ph.D., also highlighted the significance of the gift. He described it as “a transformational gift” that will cultivate the next generation of health professionals and support the long-term health and wealth of medical students and their communities.

Bloomberg Philanthropies’ continued support through the Greenwood Initiative represents a vital step toward correcting historical imbalances and ensuring a brighter future for Black students and communities.
