Dr. Michelle Rankine’s journey from personal tragedy to a $15 million franchise success is nothing short of inspiring. Her story is a powerful testament to how adversity can be turned into opportunity, especially in the field of home healthcare.
Overcoming Tragedy to Find Purpose
Dr. Rankine’s path to success began with a devastating family crisis. Her younger brother, once living a normal life and preparing for graduation, became a paraplegic after a severe car accident. This sudden change forced her family to confront new and challenging realities.
“Imagine you’re 21 and living what you thought was a normal life, getting ready for graduation, and now you are a paraplegic,” Dr. Rankine reflects. “That was devastating for my brother and family.”
The emotional and practical difficulties of caring for her brother led Dr. Rankine to seek professional home care services. This experience sparked a desire in her to help other families facing similar challenges.
Turning a Personal Struggle into a Business Triumph
Despite having no medical or healthcare background, Dr. Rankine saw an opportunity in owning a franchise. She chose the Right At Home franchise model to enter the healthcare industry, which allowed her to leverage a proven blueprint while addressing personal and community needs.
Dr. Rankine now operates three Right At Home franchises across Texas, in Collin, Denton, and Tarrant Counties. Over the past decade, her business has generated more than $15 million.
“Success [in the industry] is offering services and giving opportunities to your caregivers to make sure they have the training because that’s my product and service,” Dr. Rankine explains. “You want to be successful really quickly … as a microwave effect, and really, it’s a crock pot. You have to really let the lessons sit and savor.”
Empowering Minority Communities Through Better Healthcare
Dr. Rankine is committed to addressing health disparities in minority communities. She focuses on educating families about healthcare options and developing contingency plans for home care.
One common misconception she tackles is the belief that families must handle caregiving on their own. “Our default to that is not to reach out to a third-party company, but going through church,” Dr. Rankine notes. “We’ll seek church community before we actually hire someone.”
She also highlights the financial aspects of home care. With the average cost of a home health aide at $33 per hour, Dr. Rankine encourages families to be financially prepared and consider long-term care insurance.
“The rewarding piece [for me] is giving solutions to a family,” she says. “I’ve always loved to be a fixer of some sort, and I’ve always enjoyed giving back in other ways.”
Making a Difference with Every Step
Dr. Rankine’s journey illustrates how personal challenges can lead to remarkable achievements. Her work not only supports families in need but also helps bridge gaps in healthcare access and quality.
Through her franchise success, she continues to make a significant impact on both the industry and the communities she serves.
