MPI Original Films’ highly anticipated movie Freedom Hair will make its debut at the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival on August 2. Directed by the acclaimed Dianne Houston, this independent film is already generating buzz. It has been recognized as one of the top five films of the year before its official release.
A Powerful Story of Perseverance and Empowerment
Freedom Hair tells the inspiring story of Melony Armstrong, a trailblazer who challenged the Mississippi government to legalize professional hair braiding. Armstrong’s journey began while she was working at a domestic violence shelter. She launched her own natural hair braiding business, determined to empower herself and others financially.
Armstrong’s battle wasn’t just about hair braiding; it was about creating opportunities and breaking barriers. Her relentless pursuit led to the establishment of the first licensed braiding salon in Mississippi. The film captures her strength and dedication, showcasing her impact on the lives of Black women and aspiring entrepreneurs.
Star-Studded Cast and Expert Direction
The film stars UK actress Simona Brown, known for her role in Netflix’s Behind Her Eyes. She is joined by Jeremie Harris and Sophia Bush in supporting roles. Armstrong herself will serve as a producer, ensuring that her story is told with authenticity and passion.
Dianne Houston, the director, is renowned for her work on City of Angels, Soul Food, and Michael Jackson: Searching for Neverland. Her 1995 short film Tuesday Morning Ride made her the first African American woman nominated for an Academy Award in a directing category. Houston’s expertise brings a powerful and emotional depth to Freedom Hair, highlighting the achievements of Black women in the film industry.
Social Issues and Lasting Impact
Beyond Armstrong’s personal story, Freedom Hair touches on broader social issues. The film addresses the struggles faced by Armstrong against a cosmetology cartel and the state of Mississippi. It also reflects on the challenges that many Black women encounter today.
Armstrong’s hope is that her legacy will inspire others to follow their dreams and break new ground in their fields. “I hope my legacy would be that I pursued what was in my heart, I persisted,” Armstrong shared in a 2020 interview with the Daily Journal. Her story serves as a beacon of hope and empowerment for Black women everywhere.
Theatrical Release and Future Plans
Freedom Hair will officially hit theaters nationwide on August 30, distributed by Vertical. The film’s festival premiere on August 2 will offer a special first look, setting the stage for its wider release.
With its compelling narrative and strong performances, Freedom Hair promises to be a standout film, celebrating the strength and determination of Black women. The movie’s release is eagerly awaited and is expected to make a significant impact on audiences across the country.
