Sharah G. Connor is making waves in the boating world as the founder of Mahogany Yacht Charters.
Her company is not only reshaping D.C.’s yacht charter scene but also setting new standards for excellence and representation in the industry.
Breaking Barriers in Boating
Sharah G. Connor is pioneering change in a traditionally male-dominated field. As one of the few Black women in boating, she’s overcoming significant challenges and reshaping perceptions. Connor’s company, Mahogany Yacht Charters, offers luxury yacht experiences that cater to a diverse clientele, challenging the status quo of the boating industry.
The industry has long struggled with gender bias and racial discrimination, with women making up only about 10% of the workforce, as noted by the National Marine Manufacturers Association. Connor’s success highlights the need for increased diversity and inclusion in this sector.
From Vision to Reality
In 2020, Connor launched Mahogany Yacht Charters after recognizing a gap in the market for luxury boating experiences that catered to her community’s needs. Her childhood summers in Providence, Rhode Island, sparked her passion for the water. Combining her background in business and real estate with her maritime enthusiasm, Connor created a charter service that blends elegance and personal touch.
“Audacity is a very big word for me because you have to have the audacity to make things happen, especially when faced with many obstacles,” Connor shared. Her journey from vision to voyage is a testament to her perseverance and innovative spirit.
A Commitment to Excellence
Mahogany Yacht Charters is distinguished by its commitment to providing personalized, luxurious experiences. Every charter is carefully planned, with attention to detail from gourmet catering to customized itineraries showcasing D.C.’s scenic waterways. Connor’s team is dedicated to ensuring that each outing is memorable and exceeds client expectations.
“We’re more than just a charter company,” Connor says. “We want to give back to the community and show women of color that anything is possible if you don’t take no for an answer.” Her approach not only elevates the luxury charter experience but also fosters a sense of empowerment and inclusion.
Inspiring Future Generations
Connor’s impact extends beyond her business. She’s passionate about creating opportunities for other women of color in the boating industry through mentorship and partnerships with organizations like Miss Black USA. Her dedication to fostering diversity is reshaping the industry and inspiring future generations.
Connor’s story is one of passion and perseverance. Balancing a full-time job and running her company, she remains committed to excellence and innovation. “The way I am able to juggle it is because I’m passionate about it,” she explains.
