Lauren Scruggs has made history at the 2024 Paris Olympics by winning silver in women’s individual foil fencing. This achievement marks her as the first Black American woman to earn an individual medal in this fencing event.

A Historic Achievement in Paris

Lauren Scruggs’ silver medal win is a milestone for U.S. fencing. She achieved this remarkable feat at the 2024 Paris Olympics, competing in an event where she and defending Olympic champion Lee Kiefer secured the top two spots.

Kiefer won her second gold medal, adding to the significance of Scruggs’ performance. Scruggs shared her excitement with The Today Show, expressing how surreal it felt to see her family in the stands and to compete in front of such a large audience. “Just to have the medal over me and feel the weight was heavy, was unbelievable,” she said.

An Inspiring Role Model

Scruggs’ victory is more than just a personal triumph; it’s a source of inspiration. She hopes her success will encourage other Black girls to explore fencing, a sport not commonly pursued in many communities.

“In certain communities, fencing is just not a sport you do,” Scruggs told NBC News. “So I would say to those people who are in those communities and who are interested in fencing: Do what you want to do … and follow your passion.” Her hope is that her achievement will open doors for others and change perceptions about the sport.

A Proud Moment for Fencing and Mentorship

Peter Westbrook, the first Black American to win an Olympic medal in fencing, has been a significant mentor to Scruggs. Westbrook believes Scruggs’ success will motivate more young girls of color to try fencing.

“They’re going to try fencing because of Lauren,” he told The Washington Post. Westbrook’s mentorship and Scruggs’ achievement together highlight a growing representation in the sport, which is vital for its future.

Balancing Academics and Athletics

Beyond her fencing career, Scruggs is also making strides academically. The Queens, New York native is set to begin her senior year at Harvard University and recently worked as a full-time intern in wealth management.

This balance of academics and athletics underscores her dedication and versatility. Scruggs’ ability to excel in both areas serves as a testament to her hard work and determination.
