Angela Tabiri, a talented mathematician from Accra, Ghana, has been named the World’s Most Interesting Mathematician. The award, presented by The Big Internet Math-Off, highlights her revolutionary contributions to the field of quantum algebra. The contest, held from July 1 to July 24 in the United States, celebrated her innovative approach to solving complex mathematical problems.
Tabiri, affectionately known as the Maths Queen, stood out among 16 global competitors. Her engaging demonstrations of the exciting and relevant aspects of math captivated the judges and audience alike.
Breaking New Ground in Quantum Algebra
Angela Tabiri’s groundbreaking work in quantum algebra was a key factor in her receiving this prestigious award. Her research explores the intricate relationships between algebraic structures and quantum theory, paving the way for new discoveries in the field.

From Passion to Recognition
Tabiri’s journey began with a passion for numbers and problem-solving. She graduated from the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) Ghana in 2014 and later pursued further studies at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP). In 2019, she earned a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Glasgow, supported by the Schlumberger Foundation Faculty for the Future Fellowship.
Her academic journey reflects a commitment to overcoming challenges and stereotypes in the male-dominated field of mathematics.
Leading and Inspiring the Next Generation
Beyond her academic achievements, Angela Tabiri is a prominent leader and mentor. She is a Research Associate focusing on quantum algebra and manages the Girls in Mathematical Sciences Program (GMSP) at AIMS Ghana. This program nurtures young female talent in mathematics.
Tabiri also organizes Science Slam Ghana, an event that makes scientific research accessible and engaging for the public. Additionally, she founded Femafricmaths, an NGO that supports and promotes female African mathematicians through outreach and training activities.
A Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion
Angela Tabiri’s dedication to diversity and inclusion extends beyond her research. She actively mentors young students, particularly girls, to encourage them to pursue careers in STEM fields. Her work with Femafricmaths and other initiatives aims to inspire and support future generations of mathematicians.
In February 2024, Tabiri was selected by the Falling Walls Foundation for the 2024 Female Science Talents Intensive Track Program. This year-long program is designed to promote female leadership in science and business, highlighting her influential role in the global scientific community.
