Coco Gauff has made history as the first U.S. tennis player to serve as a flag bearer for Team USA. The announcement was made by the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) on Wednesday. Gauff led the American team alongside NBA superstar LeBron James at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony.

A Historic Moment for American Tennis

At just 20 years old, Coco Gauff has achieved a groundbreaking milestone. The reigning US Open champion and world No. 2 tennis player will proudly carry the American flag in the Parade of Nations. This honor is even more significant as she missed the Tokyo 2020 Games due to a positive COVID-19 test.

Gauff’s selection is historic not only for her age but also because she is the first U.S. tennis player ever to serve as a flag bearer. “I never thought in a million years I would have the honor of carrying the American flag for Team USA in the Opening Ceremony,” Gauff said.

LeBron James Joins the Historic Lineup

LeBron James, a three-time Olympian, shared the spotlight with Gauff as the male flag bearer. This marks the first time the Opening Ceremony was held outside a stadium. Instead, athletes went by boat along the River Seine, adding a unique and picturesque element to the event.

James expressed his excitement about the historic moment, saying, “I could not be more proud to lead my teammates with LeBron as we showcase our dedication and passion on the biggest stage there is.” His partnership with Gauff underscores a new era of athletic excellence and teamwork.

Paris 2024: A Unique Ceremony Experience

The Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony was a spectacular event. With 10,500 athletes traveling by boat, the ceremony was unlike any other in Olympic history.

The Parade of Nations will offered a fresh perspective on Olympic traditions, blending historical grandeur with modern innovation. Gauff and James’s participation set memorable tone for the Games, celebrating the achievements of American athletes and the spirit of international unity.

Gauff’s Upcoming Olympic Debut

Following the Opening Ceremony, Gauff will make her Olympic debut in Paris. Tennis competitions are set to begin on Saturday at Roland Garros. Gauff will team up with Jessica Pegula for the doubles event, aiming to continue her impressive career trajectory on the global stage.

Her debut is highly anticipated as she brings fresh talent and competitive spirit to the Games. Fans will be eager to see how her Olympic journey unfolds and how she builds on her recent successes in tennis.
